A medical emergency involving a fan delayed the finish between Cadiz and Barcelona in a LaLiga match. Barca led 2-0 away to the Pirates when play was halted very late in the match to attend to the fan in the stands.
In the 82nd minute at the Nuevo Mirandilla, the central referee stopped play with fans in the north stand making a scene. As medical personnel rushed to help the fan, Cadiz goalkeeper Jeremias Ledesma frantically delivered a medical kit. This appeared to include a defibrillator for the medical workers in the stands.
Initially, players remained on the field during the stoppage. Both clubs had players and staff members praying during the ordeal. After a lengthy pause, officials made the decision to return the players back to their changing rooms. A decision came shortly after. Eventually, players re-emerged after a total of 50 minutes between play.
Medical emergency delays Cadiz vs Barcelona
During the pause, ESPN’s Gemma Soler reported that the fan suffered a suspected heart attack during the match. Fortunately, the fan regained his pulse, according to Cadiz President Manuel Vizcaino. Early reports show the fan needed about 15 minutes to be stabilized. After that, emergency workers transported the fan to a nearby hospital.
During the chaotic scene, a second, less worrying incident occurred. According to ESPN’s Soler, a cameraman fainted as well. However, this worker did not need to go to the hospital, and should be medically fine.
Fans in the north stand of the first emergency received instructions to depart the stadium. Medics did not want too much commotion around them as they aided the fan who appeared to suffer a heart attack. In addition to the entire section leaving, many other fans made the decision to leave the area.
At the time, Barcelona led the hosts, 2-0. When play resumed, Barcelona added two more goals in the final six minutes. The 4-0 scoreline had goals from Frenkie de Jong, Robert Lewandowski, Ansu Fati and Ousmane Dembele.
