With the winter break, I’ve decided to look at this season’s current top goalscorers. It has been an interesting season, and there are some veterans accompanied by new signings which populate this list. Here’s a look at the top 10 Serie A goalscorers so far this season:

A unique mix to say the least. We have Di Natale at the top of the list having scored 10 goals so far this season for Udinese. I shouldn’t be surprised, mainly because Di Natale has always scored plenty of goals, but every season I think that his goalscoring record will slowly die off, but I’m always wrong. Di Natale’s ten goals this season have been crucial to Udinese’s campaign, and he has scored about 48% of Udinese’s goals this season. Not bad for a 33 year-old.

Cavani is joint top with Di Natale, and while I was slightly doubtful at first regarding the Uruguayan’s abilities, he has proven himself to be a true goalscorer. The 23 year-old is tall, fast, and knows where the goal is, and playing alongside two other young stars, Lavezzi and Hamsik, he has found his place at Napoli. A large part of Napoli’s success in the Serie A this season (second place, just three points from AC Milan) has to be attributed to Cavani, and the Uruguayan has also been scoring important goals in the Europa League. If Cavani can finish the season with at least 20 goals – a notion which seems very possible – then there will be “bigger” teams knocking on Napoli’s door for the striker.
After Di Natale and Cavani we have a quartet of players all with nine goals. Quagliarella, Eto’o, Di Vaio, and Ibrahimovic have all been key players for their sides this season. Quagliarella has been a target for Krasic’s crosses, Di Vaio has scored 56% of Bologna’s goals, Eto’o has started wonderfully scoring goals for fun, and Ibrahimovic has been wreaking havoc under Massimiliano Allegri. If Juventus, Bologna, AC Milan, and Inter Milan didn’t have these players, they’d be in a very different position in the Serie A. We’ll see if Di Vaio can continue scoring and keep Bologna up, and we will also see if Eto’o can continue to score under Leonardo…
Matri is always among the top goalscorers, and that is probably why there were rumours circulating that he might join AC Milan in the January transfer window. With the long-term injury to Inzaghi, and Pato having difficulty with niggling problems, Matri could be a hard-working partner for Ibrahimovic. But maybe AC Milan have already found a different partner with the name of Antonio Cassano. Cassano will be joining the likes of Ibrahimovic, Ronaldinho, Robinho, Gattuso, and Boateng, talk about adding another lunatic to the asylum…
The rest of the list is Borriello, Hamsik, and Pastore all with three goals. I wasn’t sure about these three and their amount of goals. Borriello had a shaky time at AC Milan, Hamsik was fairly quiet last season, and Pastore tends to set up more goals than the ones he scores. But I’m pleasantly surprised, an Italian along with two young talented midfielders isn’t a bad image for the Serie A at all.

Udinese have been underachievers, this was especially seen last season, when the club only arrived in 15th place. While it could seem strange that I define them as underachievers, I know the talent in the team is incredible, especially going forward. Maybe they’ve never had the right coach, or maybe the team never gelled together all that well, but for some reason or another, Udinese have almost always disappointed their fans. While in the transfer market they haven’t been extremely active, the team already has a nucleus of top-class players. Di Natale up front, Zapata in the back, and especially Sanchez as a trequartista, who had a great World Cup with Chile. Now Guidolin will have to unify these players and make a team, like he did with Parma last season, taking them up to the midtable. And hopefully in charge at Udinese, Guidolin will find the right formula between the players, and then Udinese will prosper.

New signings
like I said before, Udinese haven’t been extremely active in the transfer market, while there are two known names, the rest are relatively uknown. Candreva returned from Juventus, where he was on loan, and he will play an important part in the midfield, especially helping out in attack. To give support up front, Udinese were able to buy Denis from Napoli, who wasn’t having a good time with his former club. But what may be more important to look at is who Udinese have sold, among which there’s Pepe and D’Agostino. The winger left for Juventus, and Gaetano D’Agostino went to Mihajlovic’s Fiorentina, two losses which could cost the club a little in solidity and speed.
What’s missing
Now that Udinese have signed Denis, the offensive area is settled, but the midfield and defense could use some reinforcing. It’s probably the defense which needs the most work, which is being built around the promising 23 year-old Zapata. A central defender and a full-back could be useful, but Udinese could still manage with what they have.
Formation
It seems very possible that Guidolin will play attacking football, especially with the talent he has up front, and most probably he’ll use a 4-3-1-2. Handanovic is in goal with a back-line of Ferronetti, Zapata, Domizzi, and Pasquale, which is probably not the most well-known defense, but it’ll do. In the midfield he’ll have Pinzi, Inler, and Candreva supporting Sanchez who will play as a trequartista, behind the attacking duo of Di Natale and Floro Flores. While this could eventually morph into a 4-3-3 with Sanchez on the right, Di Natale on the left, and Floro Flores in the middle, Guidolin will probably start with a 4-3-1-2 and move on from there.
There have been rumors about Di Natale leaving, but the forward recently commented about his possible move to Juventus and said this,
<blockquote>“I don’t know anything. I want to stay in Udine where I feel good and where I want to finish my career. I’ve been here seven years and I want to stay here, I don’t know anything about a transfer.”</blockquote>
Definitley some good news for Udinese fans who could’ve seen they’re star player move off to replace Diego, who will be moving to Wolfsburg sometime soon. So with the assurance that their top scorer will stay, Udinese will be able to play with more calm now that their captain can guide them. But a lot of what will happen this season also depends on Guidolin, and whether he’ll be able to get the best out of Di Natale. While he did wonders coaching Parma, things could turn out differently at Udinese, where the expectations will be to push up into the mid-table, and maybe into a Europa League spot. While some fans are negative about the new coach, I think that under Guidolin, Udinese will prosper.

I’m going out on a limb in suggesting Udinese will beat Juventus.&nbsp; <a href="http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antonio_Di_Natale">Di Natale</a> is the man of the moment and <a href="http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amauri_Carvalho_de_Oliveira">Amauri</a> has been the signing of the summer so far.&nbsp; Also like Roma over Palermo&nbsp;and Seina to do the business at home over Cagliari.

Juventus vs Udinese
This is&nbsp;the derby of the second round, and after&nbsp;drawing late&nbsp;in&nbsp;Florence against the Viola, Juventus will want their first&nbsp;victory over a dangerous attacking Udinese.&nbsp;The Friulini won at the Stadio Olimpico last season creating&nbsp;a lot of problems&nbsp;for the Bianconeri.&nbsp;The Turin club will be stronger at home than in Florence, and&nbsp;Sissoko and Zanetti are back in the team however <a href="http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giorgio_Chiellini">Giorgio&nbsp;Chiellini</a> is still missing from the JUVE lineup.&nbsp; Finally, it&nbsp;will be a game time decision on&nbsp;whether <a href="http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Trezeguet">David Trezeguet</a> will&nbsp;start and&nbsp;in case he stays on the bench the most important signing from this summer, Amauri will definitely start. For the visitors, Antonio Di Natale is hot out of the gates as&nbsp;he opened his season scoring twice against Palermo on match-day one. Di Natale continued this run for the&nbsp;Azzurri&nbsp;against Cyrpus by&nbsp;matching his Serie A goal tally with two more goals. On the injury side for the visitor are Felipe and Zapata normally in defense as starting XI players.

Italy have been the victim of poor defending however no blame can be given to Gigi Buffon the Italian keeper, as Cyprus kept pushing and eventually dominated the back four of Italy with a well deserved goal.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Manager Lippi was forced to make two substitutions early on&nbsp;(a possible excuse for their disorganized state) so that will limit&nbsp;options for the second 45.&nbsp;&nbsp;Gamberini(4′) and Gross (18′)&nbsp;are the players who made way for substitutes&nbsp;Barzaghi&nbsp;and Cassetti. &nbsp;Alessandro Del Piero did not start for the Azzurri because of pre-match injury concerns. <h4>Late Update</h4>
ITALY WIN 2 – 1 in the dying moments literally off the last touch of the ball&nbsp;Gilardino backheels the ball to Camoranesi who chips it over the final defender for Di Natale to score the winner and his second goal of the match.&nbsp; This was the most entertaining play of the entire 90 minutes&nbsp;for the Azzurri in my opinion. Marcello Lippi&nbsp;was probably pleasantly pleased with the late recovery but he definitely kept that to himself as&nbsp;the rest of the bench&nbsp;celebrated the late winner by&nbsp;Di Natale.&nbsp;
