Sportel concluded its Rendez-vous 2022 conference in Miami on Tuesday. At the convention, World Soccer Talk had the exclusive opportunity to speak with Sportel’s Chief Executive Laurent Puons.
In this interview, conducted by World Soccer Talk’s Kartik Krishnaiyer, learn about the <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.cms.futbolsitesnetwork.com/2022/02/28/sportel-rendez-vous-2022-miami/">evolving mission of Sportel</a>. Plus, see how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted Sportel’s meetings and conventions over the last two years.
The international organization holds panels for different topics discussing issues on the media side. In essence, Sportel’s Rendez-vous allows sports media entities to network and explore the latest trends in the sports media and tech industry.
<h3>Interview: Sportel CEO talks Rendez-vous 2022</h3>
WST: Sportel has been hosting successful conferences for decades. These are conferences where movers and shakers so-to-speak in the media business and sports meet. Prior to 2020, you hosted different types of conferences, including the Sportel Summit here in Miami, which I participated in. This year, you’ve introduced <a href="https:\/\/www.sportelamerica.com/">a new type of conference</a>, the Rendez-vous both here in Miami and in Monaco.
Puons: As you know, we’re in a time of change, with the COVID-19 crisis. It was important we provided a new type of opportunity that adapts to the needs of our clientele. In terms of communication it was important to change the name and format of these events. Sportel Rendez-vous 2022 is a new name, and it is a success. We have more participants here than in 2017 here in Miami. As you know in 2018 and 2019 we held Sportel summit’s in Miami which were different types of events. It’s not a question of quality and quantity. It’s about communication and coming back to America with a new model of events.
<h5>Format changes and COVID-19</h5>
WST: In the previous events, you’ve had huge panel rooms and perhaps less room for meeting and mingling outside of the exhibitors hall. This event struck me as different than anything I’ve seen Sportel do, at least here in Miami, going back to 2007 when I first attended one of your events.
Puons: I am going to be honest with you, the conference program is an asset. But the most important thing is the markets, the community and meetings. It’s important for us to provide the best business model for our community. If you want to provide quality-of-business, we have to have new participants. This year we have 80 new companies at Sportel.
WST: How did COVID move along your business model? From my vantage point, I don’t think it’s just the new concept, though that helps, but I see far more mingling, meeting and participants here than in past Sportel’s held in the Miami area.
Puons: Yes, of course it was not easy to launch this new format of events, especially because of the COVID crisis. But because of the COVID crisis it became very important for us to create something where our community could interact face-to-face. For two years, we organized meetings digitally. But now it’s time for everyone to see each other again and our community wanted a face-to-face event where they could meet and discuss things in person. The Rendez-vous 2022 became more important to introduce because of the COVID crisis.
WST: One of the things that’s happened through the years here at Sportel is deals get done, sponsorship and media partnership deals. How does this new concept impact that?
Puons: Ultimately, COVID has changed the world and the industry has been changing for 20-25 years. The industry constantly evolves and our Sportel team realized we need to evolve with it. We do an annual event in Monaco which has 3,000 people a year. That’s big, but we need to make sure these smaller events are more cost-effective and useful. We want to make them more regional also but with the essence still of Sportel. You still come here to do deals, we still have a market, but you cannot do business the way you did 25 years ago. COVID was a terrible thing as a pandemic but also gave us insight into how we as Sportel needed to change to be more cost effective, time effective. We thought about this concept in 2020, we were ready to develop it, but COVID accelerated it.
<h5>The changes in the media landscape</h5>
WST: Sportel has been on the leading edge of partnering and promoting streaming properties through the years. Streaming has changed the media space, talk us through how having all of these newer media companies has changed your business model and the way your events operate?
Puons: From my point-of-view, streaming is the future. Now you can watch sporting events on phones, laptops and other devices. I don’t want to say TV is at an end, but the future is streaming. The consumer wants to watch when he wants, where he wants and whatever he wants.
WST: How do these smaller regional conferences complement Sportel Monaco? Not only is that your biggest conference, but it is one of the biggest sports conferences in the world.
Puons: Sportel Monaco is our biggest event, but it is important for Sportel to branch out into other territories, to learn. We have 80 new companies here, over 500 attendees overall. We ultimately want to do good business here and help those companies, but ultimately if you had success here, you’ll want to come to Monaco. Also, today America and Asia don’t want to travel like in the past like before, so it is important for us to bring the same experience to them. These events allow them to reconnect to the European community.
<h5>Expansion</h5>
WST: You have a lot of the types of exhibitors at this conference. In fact, many I have not seen previously at Sportel. What was the motivation and thinking behind expanding your exhibitor area and allowing smaller booths?
Puons: That’s because we provided new packages. This is very important. Digital platforms, new streaming services cannot pay for a booth like we’ve traditionally had. It was important for us to connect with the evolving market but we wanted to make sure it was more cost effective. We wanted to get new people to attend these smaller events to make sure we brought new exhibitors in. In the past, we would just have these regional events be a smaller copy of Monaco, with the same exhibitors but getting a smaller return on investment because it was a smaller conference. So reaching out with new packages that are more cost friendly to startups and digital platforms allows us to make the conference unique and bring in some new participants and partners.

Following the global pandemic, SPORTEL created the “Rendez-vous”, a new format for the overseas event series, launching in Miami, the vibrant home of the first of many SPORTEL’s held in the Americas, starting 25 years ago. 
This new concept features a streamlined 2-day event adapted to the current climate, offering more affordable attendee passes and products, complemented by an innovative conference summit and a wide range of networking event opportunities, as well as various marketing initiatives to extend the SPORTEL experience.
“Two years ago, we were all in Miami, running our last SPORTEL event abroad. Today we are back with a new concept and I am pleased to confirm that our return in the Americas is a real success. We always want to provide the SPORTEL community with the best business opportunities and our strategy has paid off”, comments Laurent Puons, CEO of Monaco Mediax.
The market floor, featuring new look exhibitor products including turnkey meeting pods and exhibitor suites offering breath-taking views of Miami’s Biscayne Bay, have proved to be such a success. They were sold out well ahead of the event. 
Back to the glory days of SPORTEL. The figures are better than the two last editions of SPORTEL Miami with more than 500 participants from 290 companies, including 80 new companies that have never attended SPORTEL before. 
Over two days, participants were able to discover first time exhibitors such as Blueshape and Yuvod, providers of innovative broadcast solutions, Buzzer, an app curating the best live moments in sports to each fan’s preferences, Newsbridge with an AI and data driven media asset management, NXTID who shared the creative process behind the design of a sports NFT and GreenPark Sports whose immersive social platforms are designed to engage digitally-native fans with their favorite sports, teams and athletes. Traditional exhibitors also showcased innovation including LaLiga Tech, a new entity within LaLiga that offers a custom-built ecosystem of sports technologies for broadcasters and sports properties to accelerate their digital transformation. 
The significant increase of the New Media Sector participation (17,7% compared to 10,9% in 2020), the 150 content buyers and 52,5% of sport business C-Level executives reflect that SPORTEL continues to develop these new initiatives to keep ahead of the game.

When it comes to buying and selling soccer rights, SPORTEL is the destination of choice for sports leagues and broadcasters.
This March, they’ll be coming from around the world to converge on Miami.
In previous years, SPORTELAmerica has been the host of many landmark deals. In 2007, the Bundesliga and Major League Soccer made a <a href="https:\/\/www.dw.com/en/german-and-us-soccer-officials-sign-cooperation-deal/a-2383611" rel="noopener" target="_blank">joint announcement</a> to share best practices to help grow each league. In 2009, FOX Sports and Setanta partnered to finalize the deal to acquire the <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.cms.futbolsitesnetwork.com/2009/04/02/details-of-foxs-champions-league-coverage-revealed/">rights to the UEFA Champions League</a>, which ESPN had previously. Then in 2015, the CEO of a then unknown soccer streaming service was <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.cms.futbolsitesnetwork.com/2015/03/30/fubotv-has-ambitious-plans-to-corner-the-market-for-online-soccer-streaming/">interviewed</a> at SPORTEL. We all now know that streaming company as fubo. 
And those are only the deals we know about. Walk through the halls of SPORTEL, and you’re very likely to see a lot of private conversations between many of the sports industry’s most important executives.
This year, the 2022 SPORTEL in Miami will be a little different than usual. Titled SPORTEL Rendez-vous 2022, it’s the first in a series of more streamlined, international two-day events. It features an exhibition hall filled with companies including LaLiga, Buzzer, WWE and CAA Eleven (who are responsible for selling the commercial rights to UEFA’s national team competitions).
SPORTEL Rendez-vous 2022 will also feature a conference summit. Among the speakers, they include LaLiga North America CEO Boris Gartner, TelevisaUnivision’s President of Sports Content Olek Loewenstein, Telemundo Deportes’ Executive Vice President of Sports Content Eli Velazquez, and executives from CONCACAF, WarnerMedia, TyC Sports and Twitch.

Sportel, the world’s only convention for the international sports media and technology industry, concluded its annual event in Miami last week in front of many of the key decision makers from around the globe including broadcast TV networks, distributors, media, federations, leagues, soccer clubs, technology and software companies, marketing and sponsorship organizations and legal and consultation firms. 
Founded in 1990, Sportel is the conference where many of the major soccer rights deals are discussed and negotiated between buyers and sellers from around the world. While focusing on other sports too, Sportel also features conference sessions as well as networking opportunities for media companies, leagues, clubs, confederations and other businesses.
“Sportel focuses on media and technology and of course it evolved greatly with the evolution of the industry but, in regard to the number of sports, we’ve always been very open to all sports,” explained Sportel executive Nick Volante. “Some of our exhibiters have been there for a long time. [For example], the NBA have been exhibiting for 20 to 30 years. We have most of the major football leagues in Europe. They’ve been supporting us for 10 to 15 years. In the U.S., we’ve had really great support from a lot of the U.S. leagues, and we have a lot of great support in Europe from many of the different sports leagues so it’s really diverse across all sports.”
During the four-day event, there were panels and keynote speeches that focused on buyers and sellers connecting directly to manage media content and data, direct to consumer distribution, how to enable new content experiences and revenue streams and the paths taken to protect rights holders’ content among other things. Some of the speakers included Matt Brabants, Senior Vice President of Global Media Distribution and Business Operations of the NBA, Antonio Briceno, Deputy Managing Director of beIN SPORTS North America and Heidi Pellerano, Chief Commercial Officer for CONCACAF.
“The content was great,” said Sportel CEO Laurent Puons. “It’s a new initiative, the buyer breakfast started very well. But our goal is to provide year after year new business opportunities and initiatives to our community. We’re currently thinking about the future, about next year, 2021, to put in place new initiatives that will provide new business opportunities to our community and that is the most important.”

What makes the event unique is that in addition to having a conference, there’s also an exhibition hall where companies can showcase their content and products and have the opportunity to interact with executives of all levels. Registered exhibitors included LaLiga, the NBA, Fight Sports, Matchroom Sport, FOX Deportes, myQuiz, CP Communications, Telstra, Kiswe and Aldea Solutions. 
Sportel will have another convention in Monaco from October 26-28. Monaco also happens to be where the headquarters of Sportel is located. People from all over the globe will be in attendance as the company will celebrate their 30th anniversary and continue to foster new opportunities for companies and brands.

SportelAmerica is the leading conference in the Americas where buyers and sellers of sports TV and streaming rights meet to get business done.
In the recent Sportel convention in Miami this month, all of the key players were in attendance to network with buyers and sellers. For example, when it comes to soccer rights, just some of the companies at the show in downtown Miami included the Premier League, FOX Sports, Bundesliga, beIN SPORTS, La Liga, Univision Deportes, Ligue Un, Sling TV, MLS, ESPN, Turner Sports and IMG. Plus, there were hundreds of other representatives from many other sports.
When asked what makes SportelAmerica different, Sportel Global Sales &amp; Marketing Agent David Jones said, “That’s what’s great about Sportel. You can actually sign contracts. It’s not just about making the contact and then we make a deal somehow by negotiating afterwards. No, you can make deals at Sportel. That’s what’s so great about this show.
“You have the decisionmakers here. You have the people here that can sign the contract right away. That’s the base of Sportel and why it’s so attractive and important to people. You can get stuff done here.”

The three day convention allows key decisionmakers from around the world (but mostly North, Central and South America) to meet face-to-face with the executives that buy and sell media rights. Plus, there are many technology companies both in attendance and exhibiting who are able to partner with rights holders for aspects such as content distribution and rights protection.
One of the biggest announcements to come out of the SportelAmerica conference this month is that Sportel will return to Miami in May 2018 for the first-ever SPORTEL Decision Makers Summit, which will be an unprecedented two-day meeting designed only for an exclusive circle of international deciders of the sports marketing and media industry. This summit will provide the luxury to really “Meet The Elite” in special networking sessions and build new business relations with real deciding partners.
“Our goal is very clear,” said Sportel CEO Laurent Puons. “The Summit will only be devoted to the CEO. So we will offer to these people the platform and opportunity to meet together with people who are only on the same level. They could discuss doping issues, political issues, media, marketing, etcetera.
“It’ll be an important opportunity for only them to discuss the topics together.”
“There’ll be no exhibits. We will have a networking lounge,” said Jones. “There’ll be a maximum of 200 people. We’re also going to be very selective about who are invited. We will bring in high level speakers as well. In these panels, they will inspire people to start a discussion with each other.
“Each part of the business has an issue with the other. So we have the federation, the media, the marketing, the host cities —&nbsp;you have all of these different things, and everybody has their own needs. And there are many points where they collide. It’s hard to have a conversation about this and solve these issues if you don’t really have the opportunity to sit together, face to face and discuss certain issues. This is what this show is about. We bring these people together and get things solved for the sport and for the fans.”
The Sportel Decision Makers Summit expects that celebrities, influencers, federation presidents and politicians will be in attendance to present new projects and speak about their side of the business, which will later be elaborated in detailed discussion sessions.

If you’ve ever wondered where and how&nbsp;TV networks strike many of the deals with the leagues and agencies that&nbsp;handle the rights to&nbsp;soccer and other sports, look no further than the Sportel conferences that are held around the world each year.
It’s here that the major networks such as ESPN, FOX Sports, beIN SPORTS, NBC and many others sit down and meet face-to-face with leagues (or the agencies that represent them) such as the Premier League, Bundesliga, MLS, La Liga, NBA, MLB and others. Depending on when the TV rights are up for renewal will determine if and when the discussions will be held at Sportel or sooner, but representatives from all of the above companies were in Miami last month for the Sportel America conference.
“Nothing can replace the eye-to-eye contact and to do the business face-to-face,” said Sportel Director General Amparo Di Fede. “[The initial talks] could be initiated before. But to sign the final contracts, it’s better to have the person there.”
Sportel is now entering its 26th year in business, and it continues to be a vital&nbsp;destination for agencies, vendors, leagues and companies that do business with the sports TV and Internet networks from around the world.
“[Sportel] Monaco is our main event,” said Di Fede. “With 2,500 participants, it’s 3 times bigger than Miami. In&nbsp;Miami, this year, we are reaching 700 participants from 41 countries and nearly 400 companies.
“In Monaco, there are not so many Latin America representatives. That’s why we come to Miami to be in the middle of North and South America, to reach all the markets.”

The Sportel America was the company’s 9th edition in Miami, with the first one starting in 1997. Di Fede says that in addition to Monaco and Miami, Sportel has had other events in Asia, Dubai and Rio in recent years.
Asked how much the Sportel conferences have changed in 26 years, Di Fede said, “The market has grown very quickly. In the beginning, there were very few marketing agencies —&nbsp;maybe 4 or 5 —&nbsp;dealing with the programs all over the world. The market has grown so quickly that it has expanded the number of companies and the rights are not sold as they were&nbsp;before. It’s much more&nbsp;complicated now.”
Di Fede and Sportel aren’t resting on their laurels, however.
“We try to keep the main clients; always the same —&nbsp;la creme de la creme,” she said. “But we try to attract other activities to the sporting community. For example, companies that do the [app software]&nbsp;for mobile devices, as well as companies that provide statistics. We try to attract these new technology, which are part of the sport community as well.”
