History of the Man United vs Spurs rivalry

Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are two of the higher-profile English clubs in today’s game. United are in an echelon above, with many more league titles and trophies overall. But Tottenham is routinely a top-6 contender in the EPL with big name players, and this makes for an entertaining matchup.

Interestingly, the two clubs are the only English teams to have won at least one major trophy in each decade from the 1950s to 2000s.

However, the two clubs are not traditionally considered as major rivals. Manchester United’s clashes with Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal, and Leeds have historically been bigger. While Tottenham’s most important fixtures are usually against North London adversaries Arsenal, as well as Chelsea and West Ham.

The two met in the League Cup Final in 2009, where Manchester won on penalty kicks after a 0-0 draw. United also came out on top in the 2018 FA Cup semifinals at Wembley Stadium.

Despite the minimal animosity between the clubs, the caliber of talent on the pitch in any given game often leads to dramatic clashes.
