FOX Sports announces Copa America talent and coverage plans

With 48 hours to go before the 2021 Copa América begins, FOX Sports have finally announced their talent and coverage plans that include a few puzzling talent hires but an impressive lineup of games on cable and over-the-air television.

In total, FOX Sports will broadcast 28 games from the 2021 Copa América hosted in Brazil. Nineteen of them will be shown live across FS1, six on FS2 and three on the over-the-air FOX network. The final will be televised live on FS1 on July 10, 2011.

As well as the nightly games, FOX Sports will air Copa America Match Day, a daily review and preview show.

FOX Sports’ six-year agreement with CONMEBOL kicks off this Sunday with the English-language rights to the CONMEBOL Copa América 2021 event. Additional rights picked up by FOX Sports as part of the deal include the 2022 Women’s Copa America, CONMEBOL qualifiers for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023, 2024 CONMEBOL men’s and women’s Olympic qualifiers, 2024 Copa America and Women’s Copa America, and 2026 Women’s Copa America.

On the talent side, FOX Sports are going mostly with American accents instead of experienced commentators who know South American soccer. They’ve selected Rob Stone, Alexi Lalas, Maurice Edu, Aly Wagner, Cobi Jones and Stu Holden for analysis in the studio.

FOX’s commentators for the tournament include Jake Zivin, a commentator with Portland Timbers, and Kate Scott who was the first woman to call an NFL game on the radio, the first to call football for the Pac-12 Networks, and the play-by-play announcer for the first ever all-female NHL broadcast in the United States. It’s unclear whether Scott has commentated any professional soccer games before.
