Legendary Brazil forward Pelé has seen his health condition worsen in recent days. The 82-year-old former player is dealing with cancer and the disease is apparently advancing.

Pelé was previously diagnosed with colon cancer in September of 2021. While there was some good news regarding his condition earlier in the year, he has since been back in the hospital since Nov. 29. The hospital released a statement on Wednesday updating the public on Pelé’s condition.

“Edson Arantes do Nascimento presents progression of the oncological disease and requires further care related to renal and cardiac dysfunctions,” said the doctors. “The patient remains hospitalized in a common room, under the necessary care of the medical team.”

End-of-life care began early this month

Earlier in the month, it was revealed that Pelé would be receiving end-of-life care at the Brazilian hospital. This essentially meant that there would be no more invasive surgery or intense treatment for the soccer superstar. Following the announcement, Pelé issued an upbeat statement on his official Instagram.

“My friends I want to keep everyone calm and positive thinking,” said Pelé. “I’m strong, very hopeful, and following my treatment as usual. I want to thank the whole medical and nursing team for all the zeal I’ve been receiving.”

Pelé health condition forces hospital Christmas

However, as Pelé’s condition continues to worsen, he will now remain in the hospital through Christmas. Kely Nascimento, Pelé’s daughter, revealed on Instagram that the family will spend the holiday at the hospital surrounding Pelé.

“Our Christmas at home has been suspended,” said the legend’s daughter. “We decided with the doctors that, for various reasons, it would be better for us to stay here with all the care that this new family at Einstein gives us!”

“We, as always, thank you for all the love you show us here in Brazil as well as around the world!”

Pelé won three World Cup titles with Brazil throughout his illustrious career. The first triumph came in 1958 when he was just 17 years old.
