
<p>The <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/category/world-cup-2022/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">World Cup</a> favorites are now out of the tournament after <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/nations/brazil-national-team-tv-schedule/">Brazil</a> lost to <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/nations/croatia-national-team-tv-schedule/">Croatia</a> on Friday via penalties. Despite mustering just one shot on target in 120 minutes, the Europeans advanced to the semifinals.</p>



<p>Croatia’s goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic was undoubtedly the star of the show. The Dinamo Zagreb shot-stopper made 10 saves throughout the match. Then, he crucially added one more in the penalty shootout. While the first half of the game was extremely even and perhaps uneventful, Brazil turned up the heat early in the second period.</p>



<h2>Livakovic the hero again as Croatia beat Brazil on penalties</h2>



<p>Livakovic made save after save in the second half, including some brilliant blocks with his feet. The Man of the Match performance was particularly impressive considering his opponents. Neymar, Richarlison, Vinicius, Lucas Paqueta, and Pedro regularly peppered Livakovic’s goal.</p>



<p>Brazil ended the 120-minute match with 20 total shots. They could not break down the Croatian defense until Neymar scored a sensational goal in the 105th minute. It was the superstar’s 77th career senior score for his country. This ties the legendary Pele for most goals for Brazil.</p>



<p>However, Bruno Petkovic leveled the scoreline just 11 minutes later. It was Croatia’s first and only recorded shot on target in the game. After finishing 1-1, the match was sent to penalties. </p>

<h5>Europeans win another penalty shootout</h5>



<p>Croatia managed to convert all four shots in the shootout. Brazil, on the other hand, saw two of their chances fail to hit the back of the net. Real Madrid star Rodrygo had a shot saved by Livakovic and Marquinhos hit the post to end the match.</p>



<p>The Europeans are clearly used to penalty shootouts. They advanced to this match with Brazil after beating Japan on penalties in the prior knockout round. Croatia has now <a href="https:\/\/twitter.com/worldsoccertalk/status/1601272408484319233" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">won four of their five shootouts</a> in major tournament history.</p>



<p>Brazil’s defeat comes at the hands of European competition yet again. In fact, the South Americans have now lost their last six knockout round matchups with Europeans in World Cup play. </p>



<p>With the win, Croatia advances to the semifinals for the second consecutive World Cup. They will face the winner of the Argentina-Netherlands game.</p>

Croatia stun Brazil on penalties to advance to the 2022 World Cup semifinals. Goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic stole the show yet again.

<p>Spanish giants <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/teams/real-madrid-tv-schedule/">Real Madrid</a> have reportedly agreed a massive fee with Palmeiras for wonderkid Endrick. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has suggested that the 16-year-old striker will cost around $75 million. Because of his age, the player can’t technically move to Real until he turns 18 in the summer of 2024.</p>

<p>The six-year deal will keep Endrick at the Spanish club until 2030. For now though, the youngster will try to advance his game with his current Brazilian club.</p>



<p>The two sides agreed to a transfer fee. However, the deal is far from final. Endrick still has to to agree to the move and sign a contract with Real as well. However, these hurdles are not expected to be difficult negations.</p>



<h2>Real Madrid win Endrick sweepstakes</h2>



<p><a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/teams/chelsea-tv-schedule/">Chelsea</a> and <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/teams/psg-tv-schedule/">Paris Saint-Germain</a> also expressed interest in the teenager, but perhaps baulked at the price tag. Endrick’s release clause was supposedly in the $63 million range. Real exceeded the clause in attempts to fend off competition, as well as pay for the appropriate taxes involved.</p>



<p>Despite the hefty fee, Endrick has only played seven senior <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/brasileirao-tv-schedule-and-streaming-links/">Brasileirao</a> games for his club. In fact, the striker just made his Brazilian league debut two months ago. Nevertheless, the teen helped Palmeiras win the title for the 2022 season. The triumph was the Brazilian club’s record 11th title in their illustrious history.</p>



<h5>Impressive record despite senior experience</h5>



<p>Endrick also became the youngest goalscorer in team history when his netted a brace in his fourth senior appearance. The two goals came against Athletico Paranaense on October 25th.</p>



<p>Although he won’t be in Spain until 2024, Real could then have an <a href="https:\/\/twitter.com/realmadrid/status/1597364717869301761" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">all-Brazilian front line</a>. Along with Endrick at center forward, the reigning <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/la-liga-tv-schedule/">LaLiga</a> champions also have Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo as well. Vinicius, 22, typically features on the left flank, while Rodrygo, 21, is usually deployed on the right.</p>

<p>With eight teams remaining in the 2022 World Cup, options are dwindling as to who can win the tournament.</p>



<p>There are the usual favorites. France and England have a tasty quarterfinal fixture. <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/news/messi-magic-propels-argentina-against-australia-20221203-WST-411105.html">Lionel Messi and Argentina</a> play the Netherlands in a 2014 semifinal rematch. Then, Brazil and <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/news/no-ronaldo-no-problem-as-portugal-thump-switzerland-6-1-20221206-WST-411481.html">Portugal</a> lit up their respective opposition in the round of 16 to advance. Finally, 2018 runner-up Croatia is back in the last eight, <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/news/croatia-deja-vu-in-world-cup-knockout-rounds-20221206-WST-411363.html">exemplifying its strategy of success</a> from four years ago.</p>



<p>Still, the story of the knockout stages so far is Morocco. Granted, Morocco is far less talented than the other teams in the quarterfinals. Hakim Ziyech, Achraf Hakimi, Sofiane Boufal and Sofyan Amrabat are joys to watch. Also, Yassine Bounou, or simply Bono, picked up Man of the Match honors against Spain for his penalty heroics. He did not allow a shot to get past him, as <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/news/hakimi-panenka-puts-morocco-in-the-quarter-finals-20221206-WST-411480.html">Morocco won 3-0 on penalties</a>. </p>



<p>Technically speaking, any of the eight teams can win. Based on form, it is a different story. Some teams look ripe for the challenge. As stated, Brazil blitzed through its opponents. <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/news/mbappe-brace-guides-france-to-quarter-finals-past-poland-20221204-WST-411186.html">France looks strong</a> as usual, <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/news/england-3-0-senegal-3-things-we-learned-20221204-WST-411202.html">as does England</a>. Argentina may have struggled late on, but it still looked competent against Australia.</p>



<p>Funnily enough, these were the <a href="https:\/\/www.cbssports.com/soccer/news/2022-fifa-world-cup-futures-picks-groups-odds-soccer-expert-locks-in-best-bets-usmnt-predictions-for-qatar/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">four teams with the highest odds</a> to win the competition before it kicked off back on Nov. 20. The next three, Spain, Germany and Belgium, all suffered somewhat embarrassing exits from the tournament. But, at least Spain got out of its group.</p>



<h2>Who will win the 2022 World Cup?</h2>



<p>Those betting odds have changed, but the favorites to win it all remains Brazil. That is not overly a surprise. Tite’s squad entered as the deepest team in the tournament. Despite Neymar picking up a knock, his team has not missed a beat. In fact, it allowed Richarlison to truly shine at the top of the formation. Vinícius and Raphinha are not exactly bad options on the wing, either.</p>



<p>However, can a team usurp Brazil for that spot? <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/news/croatia-needs-penalties-brazil-thumps-south-korea-at-world-cup-20221205-WST-411342.html">Croatia</a> is its next opponent, and the Croatians have a history of success against top teams. Brazil can then meet the Netherlands in the semifinals. Louis van Gaal put together a masterclass against the United States, and he could outsmart the Brazilians. Or, it could be Argentina. The two fierce rivals would put together a game for the ages imbued with passion. As a neutral, that would be my semifinal of choice. </p>



<p>France and England would also like a word, as neither showed any true weakness at any point in this tournament.</p>

<p>Gabriel Jesus picked up an injury at the World Cup with a Brazil in the side’s loss against Cameroon. While it first appeared not overly serious, later tests revealed the Arsenal striker needs surgery. Officially, it is a medial ligament injury in the forward’s right knee. </p>



<p><a href="https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2022/12/06/worries-arsenal-gabriel-jesus-set-undergo-surgery-medial-ligament/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath</a> reports the surgery’s recovery time depends on the player. However, it can take months to properly heal and return to full fitness. Initially, Jesus intended on staying with the team in the hopes the injury was nothing serious. Now, his absence deals a major blow to Arsenal’s bid to finish atop the Premier League table.</p>



<p>Nationally, the striker appeared in all three group stage games. However, two of those were substitute appearances. Moreover, he started the <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/news/cameroon-beats-brazil-but-still-cant-go-on-20221202-WST-410943.html">third game against Cameroon</a> after Brazil already wrapped up qualification into the knockout stages of the 2022 World Cup.</p>



<p>However, with Arsenal, Jesus is far more critical. In 14 Premier League games this season, he has five goals and six assists. Granted, some of that performance tapered off since a scintillating start to the campaign. Gabriel Jesus is without a goal in his last six Premier League appearances. Yet, he does have three assists in that time frame to maintain some form.</p>

<h2>Gabriel Jesus injury puts strain on Arsenal</h2>



<p>In regards to Brazil’s loss of the forward, the <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/news/brazil-reveals-world-cup-2022-squad-as-betting-favorites-to-win-20221107-WST-407141.html">concern is minimal</a>. Gabriel Jesus served a rotational role to provide some impetus off the bench. Neymar, Richarlison, Vinícius and Raphinha appear to be the favored options in a front three. On top of that, there are options in the attack including Antony, Rodrygo, Pedro and Arsenal teammate Gabriel Martinelli are all forward options for Tite.</p>



<p>Entering the World Cup, Arsenal built up a lead in the Premier League table over Manchester City. Each team having played 14 games, Arsenal has a <a href="https:\/\/www.premierleague.com/tables" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">five-point lead</a> in the table over City.</p>

<p>In Monday’s pair of round of 16 fixtures, two teams from the 2018 quarterfinals punched a ticket to that round of 2022. However, while Japan pushed Croatia to the brink, Brazil cruised along in what has been a sumptuous World Cup for the five-time champions. </p>



<p>For South Korea and Japan, it is a harsh exit for two of the three Asian teams to reach the knockout stages. Joined by Australia, this is the first time <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/news/concacaf-was-weakest-confederation-in-world-cup-group-stage-20221203-WST-410931.html">three teams from AFC</a> reached the knockout stage of the same tournament. Japan will regret its inability to convert from the penalty spot. South Korea was simply overmatched by perhaps the most talented team at the World Cup</p>



<h2>Brazil and Croatia punch ticket to World Cup quarterfinals</h2>



<p>Starting with the first game of the day, Japan entered the game imbued with confidence. Wins over <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/news/germany-world-cup-start-shattered-by-japan-20221123-WST-409612.html">Germany</a> and <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/news/japan-spain-survive-explosive-world-cup-group-germany-out-20221201-WST-410785.html">Spain</a> had Japan as a sneaky contender to pull off a major upset or two. However, it was the usual suspects for Croatia that kept the 2018 runner-up on track in Qatar. </p>



<p>Celtic winger Daizen Maeda opened the scoring just before halftime after a goal-mouth scramble that Maeda tucked away. Then, 10 minutes after the break, Ivan Perišić, who scored in the 2018 Final, leveled the game. At the risk of falling behind, neither team pushed too far forward in the 90. Moreover, these teams took it through 120 minutes without a decider.</p>



<p>Croatian manager Zlatko Dalić pulled off Luka Modrić, Andrej Kramarić, Mateo Kovačić&nbsp;and the aforementioned Perišić in the 120 minutes. Therefore, it put the strain on the lesser-known Croatians to answer the call. It was goalkeeper Dominik Livaković to emerge as the hero.</p>

<p>Livaković, who plays for Dinamo Zagreb, stopped three out of four Japanese penalties. On the other side, Shūichi Gonda could only keep out one penalty from Croatia. </p>



<p>With the win, Croatia advanced to the quarterfinals. Remarkably, this is Croatia’s third win on penalties in the last two World Cups. In fact, in 2018, Croatia won on penalties twice, and needed stoppage time in the semifinal against England.</p>



<p>Croatia now faces Brazil in the World Cup quarterfinals.</p>



<h5>Brazil shows nothing but talent in win</h5>



<p>While Croatia and Japan went the distance, Brazil wrapped up South Korea in the opening 45 minutes. Before the two teams played half an hour, the five-time World Champions had a three-goal cushion. Vinícius Jr. opened first-half goal fest with a clinical and calm finish into the far corner.</p>



<p>Then, it was Neymar to score the second. The PSG star missed the previous two games with an ankle injury. Yet, he looked mighty fine against South Korea. He deked South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu from the spot. Richarlison continued his fine form by adding Brazil’s third. Fittingly, it was the player’s third of the tournament. He leads the team. Finally, Lucas Paquetá got in on the action with Brazil’s fourth.</p>



<p>By halftime, the game was just about over. Yet, that did not stop some South Korean celebration in the game. Paik Seung-ho scored the goal of the game from 25 yards out.</p>

<p>Granted, the shot took a deflection off the Brazilian defense. But, it gives something South Korea to take home with pride. Brazil was always going to be <a href="https:\/\/www.marca.com/en/world-cup/2022/12/03/638b334422601df6108b4577.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">a tough match</a> for a South Korean side that squeaked out of the group stage.</p>



<h5>Brazil vs Croatia</h5>



<p>This quarterfinal matchup will be the fifth all-time meeting between Brazil and Croatia, and it is the third at the World Cup. The met in the group stages of the 2006 and 2014 World Cups. Brazil won on both occassions.</p>



<p>The most recent battle between the two was back in 2018, an international friendly just before the World Cup. Brazil won that one, as well.</p>



<p>Yet, despite the dominance over Croatia, Brazil has something of a bug with European opponents. Since defeating Germany in the 2002 World Cup Final, Brazil lost to the first European opponent it faced in the World Cup knockout rounds.
