<p>As part of its coverage to broadcast the entirety of the UEFA continental club competitions, CBS has full coverage of this fixture. For the ultimate fan, there is pregame and postgame coverage as well. However, it is not the usual crew that broadcasts either the Champions League or Europa League.</p>

<p>Yet, it is on the same platforms. CBS Sports Network, which is available on a number of cable and streaming platforms, has full coverage of the game. This includes a 30-minute pregame show and a postgame program following the game.</p>
<p>The same availability exists if you have a subscription to Paramount+, the paid-streaming service for CBS. <h3>UEFA Super Cup on TV</h3>
<p>As stated, the crew for the UEFA Super Cup is somewhat different on TV for this game. Seema Jaswal is the lead studio host, joined by former Liverpool forward Luis García and former USMNT midfielder Jermaine Jones. In fact, Jones played for Eintracht Frankfurt during his playing days. Previously, Jones has appeared on broadcasts from FOX Sports and ESPN.</p>
<p>The rest of the crew are familiar faces for the viewers of the Champions League and Europa League on CBS. Guillem Balagué will be in Helsinki as the on-field reporter. Plus, Christina Unkel is the rules expert on standby.</p>
<p>On the call for the game are Clive Tyldesley and Rob Green, a familiar pair for worldwide soccer fans.</p>
<h5>Eintracht Frankfurt versus Real Madrid</h5>
<p>The UEFA Super Cup is an annual game between the previous season’s winner of the Champions League and Europa League. Over recent years, the Champions League winner has a stranglehold over the competition. Interestingly, three Europa-League-winning teams won the competition over the last 13 games. In each of those, Atletico Madrid was the Europa-League winning team to defeat a Champions League winner. It did so in 2010, 2012 and 2018.</p>
<p>Plus, these games always entertain. Each of the last four contests, and seven of the last nine, went beyond the regulation 90 minutes.</p>
<p>In this game, Real Madrid seeks its fifth UEFA Super Cup title, which would tie it with Barcelona and Milan for most in the competition’s history. This is Eintracht Frankfurt’s first time qualifying for the UEFA Super Cup.</p>

<p>Undoubtedly, former USWNT star goalkeeper Briana Scurry has an interesting life story. Not only did Scurry put together a standout career with the national side for 15 years. She also acted as a trailblazer for the sport and women’s sports at large.</p>
<p>Scurry is the first openly gay player in the USWNT. Plus, the National Soccer Hall of Fame elected Scurry as the first black woman to hold the honor. In doing so, Scurry inspired young girls from all over the country.</p>
<h3><em>The Only&nbsp;</em>documents Briana Scurry and her up-and-down life</h3>
<p>Scheduled for release on July 12 via <a href="https:\/\/paramountplus.qflm.net/c/330866/1007330/3065" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Paramount+</a>, <em>The Only</em> is a new documentary about the life of Briana Scurry.</p>
<p>Essentially, <em>The</em><em>&nbsp;Only</em> covers much of Briana Scurry’s life from childhood until the present day. She was a star for soccer in the 1990s and 2000s. Yet, the documentary digs deeper to shed light on what Scurry endured. This includes both her professional and personal lives in the spotlight. In many instances, the documentary presents new information that casual soccer fans may not know. Even then, viewers do not need to be soccer fans to enjoy the 100-minute documentary.</p>

<p>Soccer, particularly the women’s national team, is obviously a big part of&nbsp;<em>The Only</em>. But, her story is so much more than just being a legendary soccer player. Briana Scurry navigated her life and career as a gay black woman during harsher times. The documentary underlines these themes throughout its run time.</p>
<h5>Lack of fame despite success</h5>
<p>One of the clear highlights of the documentary was undoubtedly when Scurry explained her mental process during the famous penalty shootout in the <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/2015/07/06/watch-the-film-about-the-last-time-the-us-won-a-womens-world-cup-video/">1999 World Cup Final</a>. While Brandi Chastain ultimately received most of the attention for scoring the match-winning goal, Scurry made a massive save just prior to Chastain’s winner. Without the save, the Chastain goal would not have won United States the gold medal. Nevertheless, media focused on Chastain’s penalty instead of Scurry’s save, which put Chastain in that position.</p>
<p>Goal-scorers certainly receive more attention than goalkeepers or defenders in soccer. However, <em>The Only </em>questions if Scurry’s skin color or sexual orientation played into her praise from media and fans following the game. Despite Briana Scurry’s importance in the team for over a decade, she did not receive the equal marketing or popularity of Chastain or Mia Hamm.</p>
<h5>Departure from the USWNT</h5>
<p>The Hope Solo incident during the 2007 World Cup Semi Final against Brazil was also compelling, yet sad to watch. Solo, the starting goalkeeper for the tournament, was benched by head coach Greg Ryan in favor of Scurry for the match against Brazil. The U.S. women, however, were thrashed 4-0 in the game and Solo bashed both the coach and Scurry during a now infamous post-match interview.</p>
<p>Off the pitch, the documentary concludes with Scurry’s story following her career-ending and <a href="https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com/sf/national/2013/11/02/her-biggest-save/">life-altering concussion</a>. Serious health issues and financial troubles, followed by a slow rebuilding process ultimately culminates into a second career.</p>
<p>Although&nbsp;<em>The Only</em> is perhaps a bit unstructured and not exactly a free-flowing linear story, it is still a very compelling and interesting documentary. Briana Scurry’s life is just undoubtedly fascinating. The ebbs and flows of her story throughout her childhood, soccer career, and post-soccer life make for an enthralling watch. <em>The Only</em> can be accessed via <a href="https:\/\/paramountplus.qflm.net/c/330866/1007330/3065" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Paramount+</a> beginning on July 12th.</p>

<p>CBS has announced its coverage of the CONCACAF W Championship scheduled for July in Mexico City.</p>
<p>With eight teams competing and spots at the <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/womens-world-cup-tv-schedule/">2023 World Cup</a> and 2024 Olympics at stake, there is much to play for. Plus, the women’s soccer scene in North America is one of the strongest in the world. Therefore, talent abounds on CBS Sports Network and Paramount+ in July.</p>
<p>For the 2022 CONCACAF W Championship, CBS is putting the majority of the games on <a href="https:\/\/paramountplus.qflm.net/c/330866/1007330/3065" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Paramount+</a>. This is the paid-streaming service for CBS that provides access to other soccer competitions as well. For example, the UEFA Champions League, Serie A, NWSL, CONCACAF Men’s World Cup Qualifying and more all go through Paramount+.</p>
<p>In this competition, that means 12 games are&nbsp;<em>exclusive&nbsp;</em>to Paramount+, including the Final and third-place playoff. That being said, there are select games in the CONCACAF W Championship to air on CBS Sports Network. Notably, those are the two opening games between the USWNT and Haiti followed by Mexico hosting Jamaica. The other two games on CBS Sports Network are the semifinal matchups scheduled for Thursday, July 14.</p>
<p>Keep in mind that if you have a subscription to Paramount+, you have access to all of the games in the CONCACAF W Championship. The games on CBS Sports Network will be simulcast on Paramount+.</p>

<h5>On-site coverage</h5>
<p>The biggest change in regards to the the CBS coverage of the CONCACAF W Championship is the on-site coverage from Mexico. While there is pregame and postgame coverage throughout the group stage, it picks up during the semifinals and final.</p>
<p>With coverage hosted by Poppy Miller, Brianna Scurry, Kaylyn Kyle and Janelly Farías serve as analysts throughout the tournament. That ensemble will be in Monterrey, Mexico, during the semifinals and Final.</p>
<p>The match commentators for the USWNT games and the semifinals and Final will be Lisa Byington and Aly Wagner. Plus, Jenny Chiu serves as the sideline reporter for those games as well.</p>
<h3>CONCACAF W Championship on CBS</h3>
<p>For those unfamiliar with the CONCACAF W Championship, there are eight teams competing. Those teams are split into two groups of four, with the group stage centering around a round-robin of three games for each team.</p>
<p>After the round robin, the top two teams from each group punch a ticket to the semifinals. Plus, these teams earn qualification to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.</p>
<p>The winner of Group A (USWNT, Mexico, Jamaica and Haiti) plays the runner-up of Group B (Canada, Costa Rica, Panama and Trinidad &amp; Tobago) in the semifinal. The other semifinal fixture is the winner of Group B and the runner-up of Group A.</p>
<p>In the Final, the winner earns automatic qualification to the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. The runner-up, plus the winner of the third-place playoff, enter the playoff stage for qualification to Paris.</p>

<p>The National Women’s Soccer League has announced its full telecast schedule ahead of the 2022 NWSL Challenge Cup.</p>
<p>CBS Sports continues its partnership with NWSL. Therefore, Challenge Cup games air on CBS, CBS Sports Network and <a href="https:\/\/paramountplus.qflm.net/c/330866/1007330/3065" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Paramount+</a>. For those not based in the United States, games stream on Twitch, a platform&nbsp;<em>traditionally&nbsp;</em>used for video game streaming.</p>
<p>NWSL <a href="https:\/\/www.nwslsoccer.com/news/2022-nwsl-challenge-cup-to-air-across-cbs-sports-properties-and-twitch">CEO Marla Messing</a> says the relationship between the NWSL and CBS Sports allows millions to see the world’s best women’s soccer players.</p>

<h3>2022 NWSL Challenge Cup</h3>
<p>Originally, the NWSL Challenge Cup started as the league’s <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.cms.futbolsitesnetwork.com/2020/06/27/first-impressions-of-cbss-coverage-of-nwsl-challenge-cup/">reboot following the COVID-19 pandemic</a>. The league opted for a tournament-style competition rather than a shortened season. Interestingly, this allowed the NWSL to be the first top-tier sports league to return to action in the United States, taking place in late May 2020.</p>
<p>However, the NWSL adopted the tournament as an annual competition. Therefore, the 2022 Challenge Cup is the third rendition of the competition’s young history.</p>

<p>All 12 of the NWSL clubs participate in the 2022 Challenge Cup. This includes the NWSL’s two expansion teams debuting this year. Angel City FC from Los Angeles and San Diego Wave FC.</p>
<p>Dan Weinberg, the Executive Vice President of Programming at CBS Sports, says the first two editions of the tournaments provided great success. He looks forward to expanding that with the 2022 Challenge Cup.</p>

<h5>Tournament Format and Coverage</h5>
<p>The NWSL Challenge Cup precedes the regular season. Spanning just under two months, the 12 teams divide into three groups of four. Each side plays the other teams in their groups home and away. Then, the three group winners, as well as the best second-place team, advance to the knockout stage. From there, it is single-elimination, with the two semifinal winners playing on May 7 for the title.</p>
<p>Beginning on Friday, March 18th, the first 18 matches of the tournament solely stream on Paramount+. Local CBS stations air the fixture on April 2 between San Diego Wave and Angel City FC, the two expansion teams. Additionally, this game is also on Paramount+.</p>
<p>In total, three games are on CBS throughout the competition. Joining the game on April 2 is a game on April 23 with North Carolina Courage playing Washington Spirit. Then, the Championship is also on CBS.</p>
<p>CBS Sports Network will also exclusively broadcast four matches. An April 15th match between Kansas City Current and Houston Dash begins the network’s coverage of the tournament. Also airing on CBS Sports Network is the April 17th game between OL Reign and Angel City FC, April 24th’s match between Houston Dash and Racing Louisville FC, as well as the first Semi-Final game on May 4th at 8:00PM (EST).</p>
<p>Outside of the four matches on CBS Sports Network, every other match of the tournament will be available to stream on Paramount+.</p>

<p>Following his playing career, Charlie Davies now stars behind the desk for CBS Sports during the broadcaster’s World Cup Qualifying studio shows.</p>
<p>As a former player with the United States Men’s National Team, the player-turned-pundit provides analysis on the current generation. Working with the likes of fellow USMNT alums Clint Dempsey, Oguchi Onyewu and Maurice Edu. That includes the coverage upcoming for a pivotal fixture in CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying.</p>
<p>Currently, Canada sits atop the CONCACAF <a href="https:\/\/www.concacaf.com/en/world-cup-qualifying-men/schedule-results-world-cup-qualifying-men/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">World Cup Qualifying standings</a>. Therefore, January 30’s Canada-U.S. fixture carries a special importance.</p>
<p>In a recent interview with World Soccer Talk, Charlie Davies talks about the importance of the upcoming international window for the U.S., citing his career as an example. Particularly, that upcoming fixture in Hamilton, ON, which likely takes place as a top-of-the-table showdown.</p>
<p>In prior years, Davies would be in the camp preparing for the slate of games against El Salvador, Canada and Honduras. Now, his experience provides insight into how those on the field play.</p>
<p>Of course, a job as an analyst is no easy task. For one, those in this position perform constant research on teams, players and coaches. Also, there is the threat of sounding biased towards one team or player. That is especially true with a national team that, in this case, Charlie Davies played for.</p>
<p>Davies represents the trend of former players entering the media world as analysts. That’s something CBS and Paramount+ take advantage of with their panel of talent for pregame and postgame coverage.</p>
<h3>Charlie Davies talks career as an analyst</h3>
<blockquote><p><em>“It’s basically the U.S. National Team 2.0 for us to be able to come back together and be able to educate people on what we see and have experienced in an honest and genuine way.”</em></p></blockquote>
<p>Between them, Davies, Clint Dempsey, Oguchi Onyewu and Maurice Edu have 273 USMNT caps. A healthy chunk of those come from Dempsey’s remarkable 14-year tenure. Yet, these four analysts have experience playing in major competitions for the United States.</p>
<p>With Davies accounting for 17 games and four goals with the United States, he uses some of his previous knowledge. Preparation is paramount for analysts, and it requires much more depth than what it used to for the forward.</p>
<blockquote><p><em>“Typically, as a striker, I would watch the back line, I would watch the keeper, I would watch their tendencies. That was really all you needed to do. In this line of work, I have to watch each position on both sides. I have to watch, rewatch, watch, rewatch.”</em></p></blockquote>
<p>Pete Radovich, <span>CBS Sports’ Senior Creative Director, and the rest of the behind-the-scenes CBS staff assembled this crew with a certain intention. Not only do these former players have camaraderie with one another, but they have expertise that others lack. Also, do not forget the fact that each of these analysts only stopped their playing careers in 2017.</span></p>
<p>Despite the quick turnaround, Davies says nerves are never an issue on set. He attributes that, unsurprisingly, to his friends that he shares the desk with.</p>
<blockquote><p><em>“Everyone understands when to speak and how to speak. When you get to do this with your best friends, we never really felt the nerves or pressure because we were just being ourselves.”</em></p></blockquote>

<h5>Avoiding biases</h5>
<p>Davies adds that it is pretty much locker room talk. Rather than an overly formal discussion, the back-and-forth exhibited on CBS’s studio coverage of CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers makes it seem more personal.</p>
<p>However, there are certain threats to making it so casual. The major one of those is letting emotions and biases come into arguments.</p>
<p>Charlie Davies talks about how he wants to cover games fairly in his analytical career. Talk about both sides, criticize or praise both sides and be particular about positions. To be fair to Davies and the rest of the CBS crew, it can be hard to forget past allegiances.</p>
<p>In fact, sometimes those can be celebrated. Not many players can say they had to play on the road in CONCACAF for the USMNT. Less could say they scored a goal in those qualifiers. Anecdotes are among the best ways for fans to get a grasp of the difficulties of playing in Mexico, Honduras, Costa Rica or a frigid Canada.</p>
<blockquote><p><em>“I don’t want to be a homer. I want to call the game objectively and the way it is supposed to be called. That’s the only way to be successful in this role; to give a fair assessment of both teams.”</em></p></blockquote>
<p>That being said, Davies admits that he holds a soft spot for this batch of USMNT products. The youth started coming through after his career. Yet, his time as an analyst allows him to stay connected to players and coaches.</p>
<blockquote><p><em>“It’s all-encompassing, but it is a dream job. It’s one that I really enjoy with being able to have these conversations with players. I watch them grow and mature, especially with the current state of soccer players in this country.”</em></p></blockquote>
<p>This generation’s most important World Cup Qualifying games are still to come. Davies sees a promising future.</p>
<h3>Davies previews USMNT vs. Canada</h3>
<p>The Canada-USMNT fixture is far from what Davies played in during his time. In fact, the now-analyst never played against Canada. That speaks to the progression of the Canadians, which is prominent even more so over the last five years.</p>
<p>Nowadays, Davies calls Canada an elite team, and the nation’s positioning in the CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying standings backs that argument up. Look no further than Canada’s win over Mexico in the last international window.</p>
<blockquote><p><em>“That is the biggest differences from this Canadian team and those in the past. The mentality is that ‘we are one of the elite teams in CONCACAF.’”</em></p></blockquote>
<p>Draws on the road against the United States and Mexico leave the Canadians as the last undefeated side in the competition.</p>
<blockquote><p>“You have all the confidence in the world because you drew on the road in qualifying against the U.S. Also, you just beat Mexico, who is arguably the best team in CONCACAF, the top team.”</p></blockquote>
<p>Yet, one of the producers of that confidence, and clearly Canada’s most dangerous option, is out for the next three international games. Alphonso Davies, of no relation to Charlie, is out against Honduras, the U.S. and El Salvador with a <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.cms.futbolsitesnetwork.com/2022/01/14/bayerns-davies-has-slight-heart-inflammation-after-covid/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">slight heart inflammation</a>.</p>
<p>The Bayern Munich star’s absence takes away from the grandeur of this contest. Still Charlie Davies mentioned Tajon Buchanan, Richie Lareyea and Jonathan David as names that could pull the slack.</p>
<h5>Major Moment for the Americans</h5>
<p>The United States would need assistance to clinch a spot in the World Cup in Qatar during this window. That being said, nine points from three games is well-within the realm of possibility.</p>
<p>In fact, Charlie Davies talks about the expectation of three wins for the United States in this window for these young players’ careers.</p>
<blockquote><p><em>“We all think they’re going to get nine points, and they should get nine points. But, it does not always work out this way. It will be interesting to see the rotation of players used.”</em></p></blockquote>
<p>Davies refers to the mix of players at the disposal of U.S. manager Gregg Berhalter. Weston McKennie and Ricardo Pepi are the two major names that did not appear for the United States in the reverse fixture in Nashville. Those two, as well as the lack of Alphonso Davies for Canada, open up runs behind the two outside centerbacks. Assuming that Canada employs three at the back.</p>
<p>As things stand, the United States has six more games in World Cup qualifying. It is important for the team to remain near-sighted and not look ahead to the final window.</p>
<p>That window has fixtures against the teams currently placed third to fifth in CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying standings.</p>
<blockquote><p><em>“If you take nine points in the next three games, you are going to the World Cup. But, you cannot think about Mexico, Panama and Costa Rica until you take care of business in this window.”</em></p></blockquote>

<p>FOX is on the verge of acquiring the European Championship rights in the United States for the 2024 and 2028 competitions, <a href="https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/en/SB-Blogs/Newsletter-Media/2021/10/18" rel="noopener" target="_blank">according to Sports Business Journal</a>. Currently, ESPN broadcasts the quadrennial event. In fact, ESPN broadcasted each Euros since 2008. Therefore, for ESPN, the rights package is something of a commodity.</p>
<p>Moreover, the acquisition of the European Championship rights would allow FOX to also air the qualifiers&nbsp;<em>and&nbsp;</em>the UEFA Nations League. The Nations League is actually a different competition altogether, but they do feature in the same media package.</p>
<p>As stated previously, ESPN currently holds the rights to all the competitions FOX will receive. The Euros are a mainstay on the main ESPN channel. ESPN often sent a reporters or an entire studio crew to European nations to cover the event.</p>
<p>Designated <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.cms.futbolsitesnetwork.com/2021/06/24/espn-commentators-for-euro-2020-round-of-16-matches/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">commentary crews</a>, pregame and postgame discussions for each game and other forms of commentary showed the tournament’s importance to the channel.</p>
<p>Now, coverage seems to be heading to FOX.</p>
<h3>European Championship rights joins other coverage on FOX</h3>
<p>As of now, much of the <a href="https:\/\/soccertvblog.com/usa-tv-links/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">soccer content on FOX</a> is domestic to the United States. A number of MLS games, USMNT and USWNT games and CONCACAF competitions air on FOX.</p>
<p>However, the prized possession for FOX is the World Cup. In 2011, FOX bought the rights to the world’s biggest tournament for <a href="https:\/\/www.forbes.com/sites/chrissmith/2014/06/09/american-world-cup-rights-fees-soar-along-with-viewership/?sh=5e10489c2d01" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$425 million</a>, a steep increase from what ESPN dished out for the prior tournaments.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, as of press time, there is no information available regarding the price FOX will be paying for the European Championship rights. But, we know ESPN paid roughly $115 million for just Euro 2020. Therefore, it is no surprise that UEFA sought in excess of $300 million to broadcast the 2024 and 2028 tournaments.</p>
<p>So, let’s break down what FOX’s soccer repertoire includes. With the anticipated inclusion of the European Championship rights, it seems FOX holds the power to most of the major tournaments over the next eight years.</p>
<p>FOX will broadcast the 2022 and 2026 World Cups, the 2023 Women’s World Cup, the 2025 Gold Cup, and the 2024 Copa America. Evidently, much of the international landscape runs through FOX in the United States.</p>
<p>There were a number of other entities in the running to acquire the rights to the Euros. For one, ESPN surely desired to hold on to the rights. CBS and Paramount+ have a growing footprint in the soccer broadcasting world. Finally, NBC and Peacock surely had their hat in the ring at some point.</p>
<p>Regardless, the deal is a huge win for FOX. Now, at least in the United States, the channel is the must-have location to watch international soccer competitions.</p>

<h3>Other rights and streaming</h3>
<p>Like ESPN, CBS and NBC, FOX has a direct-to-consumer streaming service via <a href="https:\/\/www.worldsoccertalk.cms.futbolsitesnetwork.com/channels/tubi-2">Tubi</a>. <a href="https:\/\/go.web.plus.espn.com/mWebq" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">ESPN+</a>, <a href="https:\/\/paramountplus.qflm.net/c/330866/1007330/3065" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Paramount+</a> and <a href="https:\/\/imp.i305175.net/DV3NWa" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Peacock</a> now hold rights themselves. </p>
<p>With FOX aiming to grow Tubi into a more robust streaming service that offers sports, this explains FOX’s foray into the international game. With the Premier League and MLS being the only major leagues with rights up for grabs, FOX is among the broadcasters bidding for those American media rights too.</p>

<p>With all of the recent discussion about the NASL being reformed in the United States, I thought I’d share a very interesting video with you which is the first ten minutes of the 1976 NASL game between Tampa Bay Rowdies and New York Cosmos.</p>
<p>The above video is interesting for several different reasons, some of which include:</p>
<ul>
<li>How commentator Mario Machado and co-commentator Paul Gardner went to extra lengths to explain basic rules of the game such as throw-ins and corner kicks,</li>
<li>It seems the game was shown live on CBS Sports. One unnerving point in the video is near the end where Machado shouts “We’ll be back” hinting that the coverage was going to break for a commercial, which then didn’t happen,</li>
<li>The sheer noise from the Tampa Bay crowd before the game began and whenever Pele had a good opportunity to score,</li>
<li>The slow tempo of the game, which was probably more to do with the heat than tactics,</li>
<li>And lastly, the pass backs to the goalkeeper which look so out-of-place these days.</li>
