<p>In an interview with <em>World Soccer Talk</em> this week, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/manchester-united-tv-schedule/">Manchester United</a> legend Gary Neville avoided giving his opinion about the lack of promotion and relegation in the USA. </p>



<p>Instead, he said it would not be right for him to say that <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/mls-tv-schedule/">MLS</a> should be an open league because he is not as close to U.S. soccer as he should be.</p>



<p>The defender-turned-pundit played his entire career with the Red Devils. After retiring from the pitch, Neville has resisted taking a media or coaching job in America. </p>



<p>This is, however, unlike his brother and fellow ex-United star Phil Neville. The younger brother is currently managing MLS side <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/portland-timbers-tv-schedule/">Portland Timbers</a> after leaving <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/inter-miami-tv-schedule/">Inter Miami</a> in 2023.</p>



<p>“As passionate as I am about people not interfering in the British game when it comes to promotion and relegation, I think I need to be as respectful of my knowledge and understanding of the culture in different countries around what they believe is right for promotion and relegation,” proclaimed Neville.</p>



<h2>Neville-owned club has risen through the English ranks</h2>



<p>Nevertheless, Neville referenced just how important promotion and relegation is in England. The former player previously became a co-owner of Salford City in 2014. </p>



<p>Under new ownership, the Manchester club has made its way from the NPL Division One North to <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/english-league-two-tv-schedule/">League Two</a>. The team’s ascension through the lower tiers of English soccer is because of promotion and relegation.</p>



<p>“It’s an absolute integral part of the English football pyramid,” Neville said of the open system. “We have to have that jeopardy, that feeling that anyone can be promoted, win the league and be relegated. But I know that’s not the way in which the game’s designed and other sports in America are designed and in the U.S.”</p>



<p>“So I don’t think it would be right for me to say that the league should adopt promotion and relegation because that’s something I strongly believe in our country but I wouldn’t say that I’m an expert on MLS.”</p>

<h2>Neville compares discussing pro/rel in US to failed Super League</h2>



<p>Neville finished the conversation by pointing to the <a href="https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11661/12279748/gary-neville-disgusted-by-premier-league-clubs-involved-in-breakaway-european-super-league-plans" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">European Super League debacle</a>. Top European clubs, including several <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/premier-league-tv-schedule/">Premier League</a> sides, announced that they were forming a breakaway division in April of 2021. The move, however, quickly backfired amid intense fan backlash. Several owners of the teams wanting to defect are from the United States.</p>



<p>“That wouldn’t be right just as I wouldn’t expect someone who comes over here for 10 minutes telling us that promotion and relegation is wrong, and we want to create a Super League of sorts whereby you have a fixed 20 teams,” continued Neville. </p>



<p>“That would never happen in our country. It would destroy the whole pyramid. It’s challenging enough as it is for small clubs to be able to thrive and prosper.”</p>



<p>Promotion and relegation will continue to be a hot topic among American soccer fans. Most supporters of the sport seem willing to implement the system in MLS. Nevertheless, team owners are mostly against making the division an open league. Because of this, promotion and relegation is unlikely to come to the U.S. anytime soon.</p>

<p>Gary Neville is this week’s guest on the <em>World Soccer Talk Podcast</em>. During the conversation, Neville discusses the launch of the brand-new <em>It’s Called Soccer!</em> digital series that includes Rebecca Lowe and Jamie Carragher.</p>



<p>The trio launched <em><em>It’s Called Soccer!</em></em> on September 18. The show, according to a press release, promises to “discuss and debate the biggest leagues from around the world, the strongest clubs, the most important games and the best players — they will also interview top talent across sports, film, TV and music about their love of soccer.”</p>



<p>Neville, of course, is a Manchester United and England legend, while Carragher is legendary as a Liverpool defender who helped his team win the 2005 UEFA Champions League. Similarly, Lowe has an impressive track record as the voice of the Premier League in the United States after her work presenting the league to US audiences through NBC Sports.</p>



<p>During the episode available below, Neville discusses what to expect in the series, as well as his memories of how close he was to becoming a co-commentator for a US television broadcaster, his thoughts on promotion and relegation, and how <em><em>It’s Called Soccer!</em></em> plans to differentiate from the competition. <p>A League One clash between Wrexham AFC and Birmingham City FC was a <em>who’s who</em> of stars in the crowd. On the pitch, league-leading Wrexham and Birmingham City played out a thrilling contest that finished <a href="https://x.com/CBSSportsGolazo/status/1835777913733501230" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">3-1</a> in favor of Birmingham City. However, cameras could not stay away from the crowd that featured movie stars, Premier League winners and legends from other sports. </p>



<p>Some of these were based on ownership. Wrexham owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are regulars at the Racecourse Ground to watch Wrexham play. On Monday evening, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/watch-wrexhams-rob-mcelhenney-explain-pro-rel-on-kimmel/">Rob McElhenney</a> was at St. Andrew’s to watch his Red Dragons look to maintain their perfect start to life in League One. Birmingham City majority owner Tom Wagner was also in attendance to watch the game as Birmingham City was also unbeaten.</p>



<p>However, the more <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/tom-brady-becomes-minority-owner-of-birmingham-city-20230803-WST-447328.html">notable owner of Birmingham City</a> to be in attendance was future NFL Hall of Fame inductee Tom Brady. The New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers icon is part of the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/wrexham-beware-bradys-birmingham-break-league-one-record/">ownership group</a> of Birmingham City. He was alongside Wagner throughout the contest. Many of those cameos showed the American fully involved in the emotion of the game, too. He looked disappointed following Wrexham’s early opener. Yet, he was boisterous on his feet following Birmingham City’s goals. He also got to experience a proper heckling from Wrexham fans who berated Brady with jeers as he walked by the away section.</p>



<p>Alongside Brady were two icons of the Premier League. Fans in the stands may have more of a connection to these athletes. David Beckham and one of his sons were in the crowd next to Brady to watch the game on Monday night. Also, one of Beckham’s former teammates, Gary Neville, made his way to Birmingham to watch the game. Neville, who works as a pundit for Sky Sports, was in the same box as Brady and Beckham.</p>

<h2>Birmingham City, Wrexham to draw more stars as season progresses</h2>



<p>This game was significant not just for the people in the seats. Wrexham entered the game as the League One frontrunner. Thirteen points in the side’s opening five games was as strong a start as McElhenney could have hoped for. This loss against Birmingham City will sting. The Blues controlled the contest after Wrexham’s early goal. However, it will not be the end of the battle between two sides vying for promotion to the Championship. The Racecourse Ground will be an equally raucous atmosphere when Birmingham City comes to visit later in the season. </p>



<p>That game may feature both Reynolds and McElhenney, as the two have been spotted together many times cheering on the team they own. If that game has significance for the promotion race later in the season, it would not be surprising to see Tom Brady there, either. </p>



<p>That is all in the future, and Wrexham will return to the Racecourse Ground after suffering its first loss of the season. After Monday, Wrexham remains at the top of the table. However, Birmingham City is also on 13 points, and the Blues have a game in hand on the Red Dragons. </p>

Brady, Beckham among stars to watch Wrexham vs Birmingham

A League One clash between Wrexham AFC and Birmingham City FC was a who's who of stars in the crowd on Monday night.

<p>Manchester United legend and Sky Sports pundit <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/category/gary-neville/">Gary Neville</a> is joining NBC Sport’s <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/premier-league-tv-schedule/">Premier League</a> coverage as a special contributor.</p>



<p>The 49-year-old will make his debut on <em>Premier League Live </em>tomorrow as his former club hosts Fulham in the Premier League’s curtain-raiser at 3 p.m. ET.</p>



<p>Neville is then scheduled to make weekly appearances each Sunday, including this weekend.</p>



<p>The arrangement is part of a collaboration with <a href="https://www.skysports.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sky Sports</a> and will see the former England international joining the NBC team for special on-site broadcasts in the United Kingdom as well as from their International Broadcast Center in Stamford, Connecticut. </p>



<p>Neville will be following in the lead of his punditry partner Jamie Carragher as he makes his way onto the American screen. The pair were rivals on the field but have since become a dynamic duo on Sky Sports shows including Monday Night Football.</p>



<p>Carragher, a former Liverpool defender, was part of CBS Sports’ highly popular coverage of the Champions League last season which was hosted by Kate Abdo and regularly featured pundits Thierry Henry and Micah Richards.</p>



<p>With Neville joining NBC Sports, they have a former Premier League defender and broadcasting heavyweight of their own.</p>



<h2>Gary Neville brings further experience to NBC</h2>



<p>Since he retired from professional football in 2011, Neville has become one of the biggest names in football broadcasting.</p>



<p>Even during his career, he had tested his hand at punditry, making appearances for ITV Sport during the 2002 World Cup and the 2008 European Championships.</p>



<p>He joined Sky Sports ahead of the 2011/12 season, taking over Andy Gray’s role as match analyst on the popular show <em>Monday Night Football.</em></p>

<p>Today, he is one of the most recognizable faces of the British broadcaster’s Premier League coverage and a highly regarded figure in the industry.</p>



<p>In 2022, Neville won the Royal Television Society award for best Sports Presenter, Commentator or Pundit.</p>



<p>His show <em>The Overlap </em>has also gained popularity in recent years. It boasts more than one million subscribers on YouTube. There is particular fervor around its flagship show <em>Stick to Football.</em> Neville, Carragher, Roy Keane, Jill Scott and Ian Wright talk all things soccer.</p>



<h2>A storied career as a player for club and country</h2>



<p>Neville was a full-back during his playing career and a stalwart of Sir Alex Ferguson’s wildly successful <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/category/manchester-united/">Manchester United</a> teams.</p>



<p>He spent his entire career with the Red Devils. While with the Old Trafford side, he made the fifth most appearances of any player in the club’s history. He ranks in the top 50 for appearances made in the Premier League. During that time, Neville won two Champions League trophies. One came as part of United’s historic treble in 1998/99. Neville tacked on 12 Premier League titles and four FA Cups.</p>



<p>Jamie Carragher famously joked that “no one wants to grow up and be a Gary Neville” on <em>Monday Night Football</em>. There is no doubt that Neville’s was a distinguished Premier League career.</p>



<p>Neville was unable to claim the trophies to match at the international level. Regardless, he was a similarly steady presence in the England sides of the 1990s and 2000s. He made 85 appearances for the Three Lions in his career. His strong partnership with David Beckham stood out for both club and country. </p>

<p>Premier League clubs are receiving heat for dragging their feet regarding a financial settlement with the English Football League (EFL). The two sides had a deal worth about $1.1 billion on the table on Monday, but several top-flight teams would not rubber-stamp the move. As a result, negotiations will continue as lower-level clubs grow frustrated. The EFL consists of levels two through four, which include the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/championship-tv-schedule/">Championship</a>, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/english-league-one-tv-schedule/">League One</a>, and <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/english-league-two-tv-schedule/">League Two</a>.</p>



<p>The failure could very well put the job of <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/premier-league-tv-schedule/">Premier League</a> chief executive Richard Masters under threat. Government officials previously called on the top flight to agree with the EFL over two years ago. The massive financial package for the lower-level teams would essentially help stabilize the entire English professional soccer structure.</p>



<p>There is currently no exact deadline date set by the government for the agreement to be finalized. However, officials have threatened to use a new regulator should a deal not be agreed promptly. It remains to be seen when, or if, the government will intervene in the negotiations.</p>



<p>According to Charlton Athletic co-owner Charlie Methven, the deal is stalling because seven Premier League clubs blocked the agreement. The businessman appeared on <em>talkS</em>PORT on Tuesday to discuss the failed bid. Methven claims that <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/crystal-palace-tv-schedule/">Crystal Palace</a> and <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/west-ham-tv-schedule/">West Ham</a> are two of these clubs. The other five teams are not yet known to the public.</p>



<h2>Neville labels the move by EPL execs as ‘an absolute disgrace’</h2>



<p>Former <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/manchester-united-tv-schedule/">Manchester United</a> defender Gary Neville called the block by the Premier League “an absolute disgrace” during a recent appearance on <em>Sky Sports</em>. The lack of negotiations in the aforementioned deal directly affects Neville due to his partial ownership of Salford City. The Manchester area club currently competes in League Two.</p>

<p>“It is about the welfare of the game and the sustainability of the whole league,” <a href="https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/68542248" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">proclaimed</a> Neville. “The Premier League at this moment in time are negligent in their dismissive nature, just pushing it down the road, thinking ‘maybe a regulator will sort it, maybe we’ll sort it’ and not doing anything.”</p>



<p>“That’s not good governance, it just demonstrates to me that they are not looking after the whole game like they should be. It angers me every time I see they have a Premier League meeting and seem to look after themselves but not look after the rest of football.”</p>



<h2>Premier League spending rules set to change as early as this summer</h2>



<p>Instead of focusing on the deal during the recent meeting, Premier League clubs opted to tweak their profitability and sustainability rules. The current laws state that top-flight clubs cannot record losses exceeding $133 million over three years. <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/everton-tv-schedule/">Everton</a>, <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/nottingham-forest-tv-schedule-for-us-viewers/">Nottingham Forest</a>, and <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/manchester-city-tv-schedule/">Manchester City</a> all face charges of violating these rules. <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/chelsea-tv-schedule/">Chelsea</a> and <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/newcastle-united-tv-schedule/">Newcastle</a> are also under threat of breaching the laws.</p>



<p>The upcoming changes, which could come as early as this summer, will follow UEFA’s laws currently in place. Financial rules with the governing body of the sport in Europe are determined by a squad cost-to-revenue ratio. These stipulations limit clubs to spend 70% of reported revenue on certain expenses, which include transfer fees and player wages.</p>



<p>Changes are coming to the financial laws. Yet, the charges for the trio of Premier League clubs will not alter. The previous charges to all three teams are to remain in place. This will not make any of these clubs happy. After all, they may face punishments for rules that could change completely.</p>



<p>Everton has already suffered a six-point penalty and may face an additional penalty due to a second charge. Forest will soon learn its fate from the independent regulator. Finally, City’s case will not finish until later this year. </p>

<p>Gary Neville has hinted that <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/manchester-united-tv-schedule/">Manchester United</a> manager Erik ten Hag could very well be fired in the near future. The pundit looked on as his former team was crushed 3-0 at home on Wednesday by <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/newcastle-united-tv-schedule/">Newcastle</a>. The heavy defeat saw the Red Devils crash out of the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/league-cup-tv-schedule/">Carabao Cup</a> in the fourth round. United topped the Magpies in the previous competition’s final back in February.</p>



<p>“Last night we saw the Theatre of Dreams turn into the Theatre of Nothing,” Neville <a href="https://twitter.com/GNev2/status/1719967956648534490" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wrote</a> on X after the dismal performance. “Every single United fan bored and flat. On the pitch the players in shock, the performances woeful, and a manager struggling in front of our eyes. We’ve seen it before, we know how it ends and we’ve had enough.”</p>



<h2>Manager claims to ‘fight’ for the club during difficult period</h2>



<p>The most recent result is not exactly an outlier in United’s season. In fact, the Red Devils have already suffered eight total defeats in the current campaign. This comes as the club has played just 15 matches so far this season. Not only have they now been knocked out of the Carabao Cup, but they are also struggling in other competitions as well.</p>



<p>United currently sit eighth in the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/premier-league-tv-schedule/">Premier League</a> standings after losing half of their fixtures. They also would not advance to the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/champions-league-tv-schedule/">Champions League</a> knockout stage if their group games ended now. The Red Devils are third in Group A behind <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/bayern-munich-tv-schedule/">Bayern Munich</a> and <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/galatasaray-tv-schedule-for-us-viewers/">Galatasaray</a>.</p>

<p>Nevertheless, United’s manager told reporters after the Newcastle defeat that he will keep fighting for the team. “I am a fighter and I know it is not always going to go up and we have a lot of setbacks this season,” <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/nov/02/i-am-a-fighter-erik-ten-hag-defiant-after-newcastle-humble-manchester-united" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stated</a> ten Hag. “But also, you have to deal with it and that is never an excuse.”</p>



<p>“I see it as a challenge. I am a fighter, and I am in that fight, and I have to make sure that I share the responsibility with my players and that we stick together and fight together, and get better results.”</p>



<h2>Gary Neville says ten Hag is not alone in the blame</h2>



<p>Neville also voiced his concern over the club’s lack of leadership from the top. The former Red Devil praised the way Newcastle and <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/manchester-city-tv-schedule/">Manchester City</a>, two teams that United has played in recent days, set up for success beyond their managers.</p>



<p>“On my way up to the gantry last night I bumped into Dan Ashworth,” continued Neville. “He transformed the FA’s structure, set <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/brighton-tv-schedule-where-to-watch-the-seagulls/">Brighton</a> up for this incredible period of success, and has now built a strong foundation for the new owners at Newcastle.”</p>



<p>“In the last two matches, Manchester United has played two clubs that have installed proper football departments to support the team on the pitch and off it. The complete opposite of United.”</p>



<p>Ten Hag <a href="https://apnews.com/article/man-united-ten-hag-agent-kees-vos-50eb96bc7d45208482d76b239063de1b" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">recently claimed</a> that he essentially has 50% power in deciding on player transfers. However, several high-profile player purchases have not worked out as of yet since the manager entered the fray. This includes the club’s second-highest transfer ever, Antony, after his $95 million move in 2022. Ten Hag previously coached the Brazilian at <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/ajax-tv-schedule/">Ajax</a>.</p>

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has claimed that Erik ten Hag is on the hot seat following another Manchester United loss.


<p>Gary Neville has given <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/chelsea-tv-schedule/">Chelsea</a> co-owner Todd Boehly a scathing review of his first season with the club. Boehly, along with his investment partners, purchased the Blues in a <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/2022/05/30/todd-boehlys-consortium-complete-chelsea-takeover/">$5.4 billion deal</a> nearly one year ago. Things, however, have not exactly gone as planned for the American businessman.</p>



<p>Despite finishing third in the <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/premier-league-tv-schedule/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Premier League</a> table and collecting the FIFA Club World Cup title last season, Chelsea have struggled mightily during the current campaign. In fact, the west London outfit is currently sitting 12th in the English top flight. Neville, a former Manchester United defender now working for Sky Sports, blamed Boehly for this season’s collapse.</p>



<h2>Disastrous season down to Todd Boehly says Gary Neville</h2>



<p>“He’s a nightmare. He’s completely misread this league,” Neville <a href="https://www.skysports.com/football/news/32461/12872635/gary-neville-podcast-chelsea-mess-is-todd-boehlys-doing-they-can-challenge-top-three-if-he-stops-meddling" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">said</a> of Boehly. “And he’ll learn very quickly, I’m sure. Because what has happened this season is purely down to him.”</p>

<p>“He’s come in, and he needed somehow to keep the footballing department together. He’s the non-footballing department. You’re the owner. You’re not a Premier League player or a coach. You’ve got no experience in this league so stay where you are and allow the people to run the football club [who have done so] successfully over the last 10 to 15 years.”</p>



<p>“Thomas Tuchel was gone after a few games and all of a sudden you’re in complete turmoil,” continued Neville. “Then they flipped it to a model giving players eight-year contracts to 22-year-olds!”</p>



<h5>Chelsea owner proclaims he’s here to stay</h5>



<p>Boehly spoke earlier on Thursday about his commitment to the club despite the struggles. </p>



<p>“The fans are demanding and they want to win and we get that. We want to win,” stated Boehly. “I think our view though was this was a long-term project and we’re committed to the long-term. We very much believe that we’re going to figure it out. We’ve got the best league in the world. We’ve got, what I believe, the top city in the world. And we’ve got an unbelievable location in the top city in the world.”</p>

<p>Chelsea has lost six consecutive matches in all competitions and has failed to record a victory since mid-March. However, they will try to help right the ship on Saturday when they travel to Bournemouth. The Cherries are level on points with the Blues in the current Premier League table.  </p>
