
<p>Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has had his say in the Messi vs Maradona debate. Fresh off of collecting the 2022 World Cup trophy, the country’s third, Scaloni has chosen Lionel Messi over Diego Maradona.</p>



<p>“If I have to choose one I choose Leo, I have something special with him. He is the best of all time, although Maradona was also great,” Scaloni told Spanish radio station <a href="https:\/\/www.cope.es/programas/el-partidazo-de-cope/noticias/entrevista-lionel-scaloni-el-partidazo-de-cope-16-01-23-20230116_2498106">Cope</a>.</p>



<p>Like Messi, Maradona also brought home a World Cup title to <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/nations/argentina-national-team-tv-schedule/">Argentina</a>. Similarities between Maradona’s triumph in 1986 and Messi’s 2022 tournament are fairly interesting. Both players guided Argentina to the title, won the Golden Ball trophy for best player at the competition, and finished with the second-most goals at the tournament.</p>



<h5>Scaloni first called Messi when hired as Argentina boss</h5>



<p>During the radio interview, Scaloni also spoke about wanting to get on the same page with Messi when he was appointed head coach in 2018. The coach arrived to the Argentina national team at a contentious time. After all, they just suffered a disappointing 2018 World Cup in Russia and Messi was taking time away from the team.</p>

<p>“The first thing we did was have a video call with Messi. He said he was honored and the first thing we said to him was ‘Come back. We’ll wait for you’. That’s what we did and eight months later he came and found an incredible group,” Scaloni <a href="https:\/\/www.espn.com/soccer/argentina-arg/story/4854440/maradona-was-great-but-i-prefer-lionel-messi-argentina-coach-scaloni" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stated</a>.</p>



<h2>Scaloni collects 2 major trophies with Messi in 17 months</h2>



<p>Scaloni has now collected a World Cup and Copa America titles with the South American nation. He won the Copa America trophy in 2021 as they beat their biter rivals <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/nations/brazil-national-team-tv-schedule/">Brazil</a> in the final. </p>



<p>The 44-year-old coach is now in contract negotiations with Argentina to remain as head coach. Despite <a href="https:\/\/en.as.com/soccer/scaloni-set-to-sign-contract-extension-with-argentina-n/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">recent reports</a> claiming that he is set to re-sign with the team, Scaloni also opened the door to coach <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/nations/spain-national-team-tv-schedule/">Spain</a> in the near future. The coach replied with “why not?” when asked about the possibility to switch to the European country.</p>

<p>Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has claimed that superstar Lionel Messi could feature during the 2026 World Cup. The coach made the statement during an interview with Spanish radio station Calvia FM. Messi would turn 39 during the tournament held in North America.</p>



<p>“I think Messi can make it to the next World Cup,” <a href="https:\/\/www.espn.com.ar/futbol/mundial/nota/_/id/11458824/lionel-scaloni-lionel-messi-campeon-del-mundo-seleccion-argentina-futuro-mundial-2026-qatar-2022" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">said</a> Scaloni. “It will depend a lot on what he wants and what happens over time, that he feels good. The doors will always be open. He is happy on the pitch, and for us [it] would be good.”</p>



<p>Despite the comments, Messi previously stated that the <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/news/lionel-messi-says-2022-will-be-his-last-world-cup-20221007-WST-403423.html">2022 World Cup would be his last</a>. “It’s my last World Cup, surely,” Messi told <em><a href="https:\/\/www.espn.com.ar/futbol/mundial/nota/_/id/11036997/especiales-star+-qatar-en-primera-persona-lionel-messi-figuras-por-star+-streaming-sebastian-vignolo-ultimo-mundial" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ESPN</a></em> in October. “I’m counting down the days to the World Cup. There is anxiety and nerves at the same time. Wanting it to be now, what is going to happen, and ultimately, how is it going to go?”</p>



<h2>Messi not slowing down before World Cup 2026</h2>



<p>It’s fair to say that it went pretty well for him. Messi guided <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/nations/argentina-national-team-tv-schedule/">Argentina</a> to their third World Cup title in history, his first with the team. Despite his advancing age, the superstar scored seven goals during the competition and was awarded as the top player of the tournament.</p>

<p>Messi has, however, suggested that he is not ready to retire just yet. He spoke on his future with Argentina following the World Cup Final. “I really enjoy being in the national team and being a part of this group,” <a href="https:\/\/www.espn.com/soccer/argentina-arg/story/4849693/lionel-messi-could-play-in-2026-world-cup-for-argentina-coach-lionel-scaloni" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stated</a> Messi. “I want to continue experiencing more games [with the national team] as world champion.”</p>



<h5>Coach claims Messi was one of the greats before World Cup</h5>



<p>While winning the World Cup cemented his legacy, Scaloni also claimed that Messi did not necessarily need to win it to become the greatest of all time. “I think it wasn’t necessary for Messi to win a World Cup to be one of the greats or the greatest,” the coach continued. “It happens that more is always asked of him. Now I don’t know what is going to be asked of him.”</p>



<p>“Happy for him, but above all for the country, for the happiness that we gave ourselves, because being in Argentina these days, there is a euphoria that was really worth achieving.”</p>

<p>Argentina and Croatia lock horns at Lusail stadium on Tuesday evening for a spot in the World Cup Final next Sunday. Both sides qualified for the semifinals on penalty shootouts.</p>



<p>Lionel Messi and <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/news/argentina-edges-the-netherlands-in-world-cup-classic-20221209-WST-411833.html">Argentina edged out the Netherlands</a> in a World Cup classic. Meanwhile, <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/news/croatia-beat-brazil-on-penalties-as-goalkeeper-stars-20221209-WST-411802.html">Croatia stunned</a> pre-tournament favorites Brazil.</p>



<p>Luka Modrić&nbsp;hopes to go one step further from <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/news/croatia-deja-vu-in-world-cup-knockout-rounds-20221206-WST-411363.html">Russia four years ago.</a> Back then, the European side finished runners up to France. At the same time, Argentina are looking to capture the coveted trophy for the first time since 1986. It narrowly missed out in Brazil in 2014 after losing to Germany in extra time.</p>

<h5>Midfield sets the tone</h5>



<p>In Modrić, Mateo Kovačić&nbsp;and Marcelo Brozović, Croatia arguably have the best midfield trio in world football. Zlatko Dalic’s men line up in a 4-3-3 dominating the proceedings in the middle of the field. Also, it can switch to a 4-5-1 without the ball. In doing so, Andrej Kramarić&nbsp;and Mario Pašalić&nbsp;tuck in to work tirelessly in a midfield five. </p>



<p>Croatia aim to slow Argentina’s tempo with their ball retention. Moving the ball around makes it difficult for <em>La</em> <em>Albiceleste </em>to get a foothold into the game.</p>



<p>Lionel Scaloni has dealt with the <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/news/argentina-possible-candidates-for-lo-celso-role-20221116-WST-408343.html">lack of Giovani Lo Celso</a> very well throughout the tournament. Alexis Mac Allister, Enzo Fernandez and Rodrigo De Paul formed a formidable partnership. The side has vertical transition to contribute to the attack with every opportunity.</p>

<h5>Wingplay could decide the result</h5>



<p>Argentina come into the clash without fullbacks Marcos Acuña and Gonzalo Montiel. Both picked up suspensions following accumulation of yellow cards. Missing Acuña will be huge blow for Scaloni. The Sevilla star has been a revelation in the tournament. The 31-year-old is defensively solid and contributes tirelessly on the left wing. </p>



<p>Acuña shut down Denzel Dumfries against Netherlands. In the same contest, he won the penalty that saw Argentina race to a 2-0 lead. With Acuña out for the clash, Croatia will look to exploit the left wing with Pašalić&nbsp;and Josip Pašalić&nbsp;hunting in pairs, especially the latter who had a great match against Brazil managing to keep Vinícus Jr and Rodrygo quiet for the entire duration.</p>



<p>The right wing is where Argentina have an advantage, Nahuel Molina scored the opener against the Dutch thanks to Messi’s incredible reverse pass assist and the Atletico full back will fancy his chances against Kramarić&nbsp;while also taking on left back Borna Sosa with his darting runs.</p>

<p>De Paul has played admirably in a right sided role and should Angel Di Maria be fit and ready to start, Croatia will have to cope with constant pressure on the right flank.</p>



<h5>Messi moments and Gvardiol</h5>



<p>Joško&nbsp;Gvardiol is arguably in the form of his life. Once again, Croatia rely on the 20-year-old center back to keep Argentina at bay. The RB Leipzig star performed beyond his years. Alongside Dejan Lovren, the pair proved to be a solid pairing at the heart of the defense. </p>



<p>Argentina will be looking to press high with Julian Alvarez up front while Lionel Messi will be living for his ‘moments.’ The 35-year-old PSG star has looked unplayable over the course of the World Cup. Despite Croatia’s wealth of talent, it has to keep a close eye on the diminutive left-footed genius. </p>



<p>Messi looks to drift into half spaces dragging the defenders out of possession. Then, he either goes himself in the final third or looking to create an opportunity when there seemed little danger. <p>Argentina kept its <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/category/world-cup-2022/">World Cup</a> hopes alive and well following a fanatical victory against the <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/nations/netherlands-national-team-tv-schedule/">Netherlands</a> on Friday. The matchup will go down as one of the greatest quarterfinal games in tournament’s storied lore. In the end, the South Americans advanced to the semifinals in a penalty shootout. </p>



<p>It looked like <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/nations/argentina-national-team-tv-schedule/">Argentina</a> may cruise passed the Dutch early in the match. Nahuel Molina, with help from Lionel Messi, put the South Americans up 1-0 in the first half. Messi placed an incredible pass into the path of Molina and the fullback slotted home.</p>

<p>It was the defender’s first ever international goal for his team. On the other side of the spectrum, the assist was Messi’s seventh in his World Cup career.</p>



<p>Argentina doubled their lead in the 73rd minute when Dutch fullback Denzel Dumfries brought down Marcos Acuna inside the box. Messi, of course, would take and then convert the spot kick. However, there was an incident three minutes later that seemed to flip the momentum towards the Dutchmen.</p>



<h5>Martinez’s antics wake up Dutch team</h5>



<p>Emi Martinez stood over Netherlands striker Luuk de Jong after harmlessly collecting a cross in his penalty area. The bizarre move seemed to put a fire under the Dutch team. Substitute Wout Weghorst gave the Netherlands their goal just seven minutes after the incident. It wouldn’t be the last we heard from the forward.</p>



<p>Weghorst eventually leveled the scoreline in the 10th, and final, minute of normal time. The Netherlands worked an incredible free kick routine as Teun Koopmeiners played the short ball to Weghorst and the striker completed his brace. </p>

<h2>Argentina beats the Netherlands on World Cup penalties</h2>



<p>Despite not making a single save in the 120-minute match, Martinez blocked the first two penalties that he faced in the shootout. Virgil van Dijk and Steven Berghuis both failed to convert their penalty shots. Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez later put the final dagger into the Netherlands team.</p>



<p>The epic match was also littered with <a href="https:\/\/twitter.com/worldsoccertalk/status/1601318846274703360" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fouls and yellow cards</a> throughout. Referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz handed out 17 total cards in the game. None, however, resulted in a player being sent off. Leandro Paredes was perhaps the luckiest player not to see multiple cards after committing a rough foul and subsequently firing the ball into the Dutch bench.</p>

<p>Messi started the match confidently. He was leading his beloved national team into what is <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/news/lionel-messi-says-2022-will-be-his-last-world-cup-20221007-WST-403423.html">likely his final World Cup</a>. Gone were the visible signs of stress from four years ago. Messi didn’t look as if he had the weight of a nation on his shoulders. He now had a band of teammates who worked as a unit.</p>



<p>Lionel Scaloni’s charges had the tag of pre-tournament favorites due to this unity. After years of having talented players who didn’t form a good team, the South American giants had a reliable group who could win together.</p>



<p>Yet, after just 45 minutes in Lusail, Messi’s supporting cast deserted him. &nbsp;</p>



<h2>Saudi Arabia surprised everyone with stunner over Argentina</h2>



<p>Saudi Arabia’s equalizer came two minutes after half-time. Saleh Alshehri was through on goal. He placed a beautiful shot into the bottom corner of the net.</p>



<p>The goal shocked the South Americans. Saudi Arabia failed to register a shot in the first half of play. Suddenly, the Saudis were in the ascendency. Saudi Arabia flew into challenges, eliminating any Argentina time on the ball. Consequently, the fans’ energy, and any momentum from the first half, evaporated. </p>



<p>Argentina were on the ropes. After 53 minutes, an improbable draw turned into a World Cup miracle.</p>



<p>Salem Aldawsari etched his name into Saudi folklore with a Goal of the Tournament contender. He took advantage of a nervy Argentina defense to curl one past Emi Martínez.</p>

<p>From there, Argentina had a mountain to climb. All the pressure and anxiety from Russia in 2018 came flooding back. The color from Messi’s face went flushing out.</p>



<p>He knew he would have to step up, and he was met with <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/2022/09/27/usmnt-staggers-into-world-cup-following-draw-with-saudi-arabia/">a resolute Saudi backline</a>. Nobody could have predicted how organized the <a href="https:\/\/www.fifa.com/fifa-world-ranking/men?dateId=id13792" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">51<sup>st</sup> ranked team</a> in the world would be. Defensive headers kept Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez off the scoresheet. Meanwhile Mohammed Al-Owais made five saves and was in inspired form.</p>



<p>Argentina couldn’t find a breakthrough once the pressure was on. Now, the side faces a difficult passage into the knockout phase.</p>



<h5>“We fully respected Saudi Arabia”</h5>



<p>Lionel Scaloni knows there is no room for error now. Tough fixtures against Mexico and Poland await. Results out of their control could influence Argentina’s fate, much like it did in 2018.</p>



<p>The Argentina coach comes under pressure after such a shock. Regardless, he maintained that his side played well and didn’t take the Saudis lightly.</p>



<p>“We fully respected Saudi Arabia,” he explained in his post-match press conference. “It’s a sad day, but as we always say, head held high, we must bounce back.</p>



<p>“It’s difficult to digest. In four, five minutes they scored two goals with two shots.”</p>

<p><a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/nations/argentina-national-team-tv-schedule/">Argentina’s </a>preparations for the <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/category/world-cup-2022/">World Cup</a> concluded with a friendly thumping of the United Arab Emirates in Abu Dhabi, 5-0. The Albiceleste enter the tournament as one of the favorites to lift the coveted trophy. </p>



<p>Head coach Lionel Scaloni, though, is far from set in his bid to lead the side to its third World Cup. He must figure out how to replace the injured Giovani Lo Celso in the Argentina starting eleven.</p>



<p>The Villareal star played an integral part of the squad since Scaloni took over in 2019. However, he sustained a hamstring injury with muscle tear that ended any chances of his participation in Qatar. The nimble left footed midfielder was left with no other option than to finally <a href="https:\/\/mundoalbiceleste.com/2022/11/09/gio-lo-celso-to-undergo-surgery-on-thursday/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">undergo surgery</a>. He vacates a massive hole for Argentina in the middle of the park.</p>



<p>Lo Celso formed a great understanding with Leandro Paredes and Rodrigo De Paul in the midfield three controlling the game and dictating possession for the South American side. Scaloni had earlier mentioned that the 26-year-old is irreplaceable ‘footballing wise.’ Now, the injury forces a replacement for the irreplaceable.</p>



<h2>Potential Giovani Lo Celso replacements for Argentina</h2>



<h5>Enzo Fernandez</h5>



<p>The 21-year-old is having a terrific season in Benfica. Now, a host of European giants, including <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/teams/manchester-united-tv-schedule/">Manchester United</a>, <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/teams/liverpool-tv-schedule/">Liverpool</a> and <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/teams/barcelona-tv-schedule/">Barcelona</a>, keep <a href="https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-11408801/Manchester-United-Benfica-star-Enzo-Fernandez-January.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">close tabs</a> on the Argentine. Fernandez fits perfectly in Scaloni’s preferred 4-3-3 system. Surely, he is among the top players to consider for a place in the starting eleve. </p>



<p>He has played a stellar role for Benfica, who are unbeaten in the domestic league. Plus, Benfica finished top of <a href="https:\/\/www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/standings/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">a vaunted Champions League group</a> that included PSG and Juventus.</p>

<p>One of Lo Celso’s biggest strengths was his ability to link up with Messi in the final third. It is a key component of Argentina’s current unbeaten run hitting 35 fixtures. While the Benfica starlet plays in a deeper role, he has excellent ball retaining capability with an envious passing range. </p>



<p>Should the Benfica player start, this could mean that Rodrigo De Paul plays a little further forward when Argentina are in possession.</p>



<h5>Alexis Mac Allister</h5>



<p>Another player who could rightfully claim a place in the starting eleven would Alexis Mac Allister. Like Enzo, Mac Alliser is having a great season at Brighton. The 23-year-old played second fiddle to Pascal Gross at times. Yet, this season, he has been a real revelation for Roberto de Zerbi.  </p>

<p>Mac Allister has been the anchor for the Premier League side and rarely makes a poor pass. He also has an eye for the goal and is adept at taking set pieces. Essentially, he can seamlessly fill the void Lo Celso thrived on. </p>



<p>Mac Allister’s father, Carlos, has coincidentally played with Argentina’s cult hero Diego Maradona at Boca Juniors in the early 1990s during the latter’s second stint with the club side.</p>



<p>Mac Allister started the friendly against the United Arab Emirates alongside Paredes and De Paul. Eventually, Enzo Fernandez also featured. </p>



<h5>The others</h5>



<p>Having been placed in <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/2022/04/04/analysis-of-world-cup-groups/">Group C</a> with Mexico, Poland and Saudi Arabia, it feels as if Scaloni will change his starting eleven depending on the opposition. </p>



<p>Messi and company start their campaign against Saudi Arabia. Alejandro ‘Papu’ Gomez is a fit if Argentina decide to use a more attacking lineup. The 34-year-old is primarily a winger. Therefore, the Albiceleste will line up in a 4-2-3-1. </p>



<p>Exequiel Palacios of Bayer Leverkusen is another option for Scaloni who shone in his last Bundesliga game against VFB Stuttgart. He picked up an assist as his side won, 2-0. </p>



<p>Guido Rodriguez could be a formidable option, too. Rodriguez can play as a central defensive midfielder. Leandro Paredes can occupy a holding role while de Paul pushes up into an advanced role. Guido Rodriguez also played a substitute role against the United Arab Emirates.</p>
