Media rights in sports have exponentially grown worldwide, as competitions pull billions in revenue. Soccer has been one of the driving forces for that. The sport’s continued growth has seen American broadcasters toss more cash around to attract more viewers. For example, NBC is paying the English Premier League $433 million per year for six years. That equates to $2.6 billion throughout <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/news/the-inside-story-of-how-nbc-rescued-its-premier-league-tv-deal-20230530-WST-434387.html">the deal</a>.



The Premier League tops the list in terms of broadcast rights deals for soccer in the United States. The disparity is large, but other sports leagues have drawn in strong deals from American broadcasters. ESPN is paying $175 million annually to air LaLiga in the United States. CBS’s three-year deal to broadcast Serie A, which expired after the 2023/24, cost $75 million annually. Previous reports indicated ESPN was paying $30 million annually for the Bundesliga. 



Global popularity of soccer is certainly stronger than it is of American sports. However, the inflated nature of the American sports media market has made those rights deals far more expensive on average than their European counterparts. Moreover, the Premier League, despite its massive deals from different countries’ broadcasters, is not the league with the most revenue from combinations of sports media rights. That belongs to the National Football League, which is one of three American sports leagues to crack the top four in terms of revenue. Research firm Ampere Analysis organized the combination of domestic and international media rights to show which leagues make the most money.



<h2>Global sports leagues with most revenue from media rights</h2>



Soccer is, fittingly, the most consistent of the sports listed in the top 10 leagues with the most revenue from media rights. Four of the competitions in the top 10 play soccer, with each of the other competitions in the top six being the only representative of those sports.

Despite having a predominantly American audience, the NFL’s media rights have not slowed down. Instead, the league’s media rights deals have grown faster than any other competition. Each year, the NFL makes <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/mikeozanian/2023/08/30/why-the-nfl-could-reap-more-than-126-billion-in-tv-money-by-2033/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">$12.39 billion</a> strictly from American broadcasters. Having six broadcasters in the deal certainly helps competition, but the NFL’s widespread popularity in the United States stands out.



<h2>The disparity between international rights and domestic rights</h2>



It is a stark difference from soccer in the sense that American sports generally do not court major international rights deals. Only the NBA can come into the conversation for international rights deals. The Premier League makes more from its international rights deals than it does from domestic agreements. Even then, the Premier League signed its most lucrative domestic rights deal in history by pulling in over $2 billion per year. LaLiga, the Bundesliga and Serie A also make a strong portion of money from international partners. LaLiga makes almost half of its revenue from international deals. 



The Indian Premier League also making just a fraction of its revenue from international deals shows that this is not specifically an American tendency. India and the United States have significantly larger populations than England, Spain, Germany and Italy. It is not surprising to see a global audience for those leagues make up a significant portion of their revenue.

On Monday, the Boston Celtics secured their 18th NBA Championship with a win over the Dallas Mavericks. Joe Mazzulla, the head coach of the Celtics, became the youngest head coach in over half a century to win an NBA Championship at 35 years old. That youthful understanding of the sport keeps his mind open, and that has led to a connection with <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/manchester-city-tv-schedule/">Manchester City</a> manager Pep Guardiola. 



Speaking after winning the NBA Championship, Mazzulla credited some of his success to the Spanish coach. Manchester City has made a habit of breaking down defenses with massive amounts of possession. In the NBA, the shot clock and the nature of scoring make that a more challenging prospect. Yet, the prowess of City’s build-up play helped Mazzulla as a coach.



“Dallas has one of the smartest defenses. We had to be creative to counter them. Pep helped me in transitions and how to move guys,” <a href="https://x.com/VarskySports/status/1802903051662958915" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mazzulla said</a>.



The Celtics coach is a noted fan of Guardiola, and the City manager even made an appearance at TD Garden in game one of the NBA Finals. Previously, Mazzulla said the way Manchester City builds out of the back impacted how he coaches his players. The pass-happy style of Manchester City reflects well in the way the Celtics play. Boston averaged 23.8 assists per game on field goals, which ranked fifth in the 2023/24 NBA season. That means the Celtics were providing assists for one another 61% of their baskets. In other words, it took the individuality out of an otherwise individual sport. One Celtics player even said Mazzulla wanted his players to replicate how Manchester City shares the ball.

<h2>Connection between Pep Guardiola and NBA is clear</h2>



Mazzulla’s praise for Guardiola and Manchester City goes beyond just kind words. This season, the Celtics’ head coach made a trip over to Manchester to see City in its preparations for a game against Brentford. Not only did Mazzulla have the chance to meet Guardiola, but he saw the way the side trained. Additionally, he spoke to players before and after their training sessions. 



As stated, Guardiola made an appearance in Boston during the NBA Finals. Cameras captured Mazzulla and Guardiola chatting. Although it is anyone’s guess to speculate what they talked about, Mazzulla expressed his gratitude for Guardiola as a friend and colleague.



“So, I’m very grateful for him, and I’d like to think that we make each other better. So, it’s great that he was here. It’s great that he was able to share some of his wisdom and got to spend time with him,” Mazzulla said.



<h2>Other American sports tied to soccer</h2>



Joe Mazzulla is not the first American coach to give credit to a soccer manager. For example, the new head coach of the NFL’s Tennessee Titans, Brian Callahan, gave a shoutout to Jurgen Klopp during his introductory press conference. 



“There’s a quote from Jurgen Klopp. I didn’t want to rip it off and present it as my own,” <a href="https://www.skysports.com/nfl/news/12118/13054502/tennessee-titans-to-hire-cincinnati-bengals-offensive-coordinator-brian-callahan-as-new-head-coach" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Callahan said</a>. “He’s a soccer coach at Liverpool and said at one point that when you agree on a common idea and work towards it together you can create something special. That’s what I believe in. That’s what we’ll do here.”



Klopp responded with words of encouragement for an American football coach rearing for the biggest job of his career.

Pep Guardiola has had a massive impact on the way modern soccer is understood, but he is also having a role in the NBA.

Kylian Mbappe has claimed that soccer stars may soon take a page from NBA players regarding load management. The <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/psg-tv-schedule/">Paris Saint-Germain</a> forward made the remarks as FIFA keeps adding matches to the fixture list. Because of the additional games, scheduling in European soccer could soon essentially mirror a 72-game NBA season.



Several basketball stars here in the United States have turned to load management in recent years. LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Kawhi Leonard are all among the top NBA stars to take nights off for rest. However, the move has not pleased fans or the league executives.



The league introduced a new rule regarding load management before the current season. The law, however, still allows select star players to miss games due to rest concerns. Teams could be subject to fines if other players do not play in games or these stars take too many games off due to rest.



<h2>French star claims players cannot be at their best due to congested schedule</h2>



Speaking in an interview with British GQ, Mbappe admitted that soccer players now cannot give their all in every match. “We’re getting closer to the NBA model, with seasons of 70 games,” Mbappe <a href="https://www.gq-magazine.co.uk/article/kylian-mbappe-interview-2024" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">told</a> the magazine. “Personally, I’m not against playing that many matches, but we won’t be able to be good every time and give the public the spectacle they expect.”



“In the NBA, players don’t play every game and franchises practice load management. But if I said: ‘I’m tired, I’m not playing on Saturday,’ it wouldn’t go down well.”

Mbappe featured in 63 total matches for club and country during the 2022/23 season. The <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/nations/france-national-team-tv-schedule/">France</a> international is also not an outlier in the situation. Many top European players now regularly play a similar schedule as well. 



The congested fixture list has taken a toll on some players worldwide. Vinicius Jr, Erling Haaland, Gavi, and Marcus Rashford all suffered various injuries during the last international break in November.



<h2>Mbappe has not ruled out playing outside of Europe</h2>



Along with discussing a possible introduction of load management in soccer, Mbappe was also asked about his future. The French star is currently in his final year under contract with PSG and has not yet decided where he will play next season.



<a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/real-madrid-tv-schedule/">Real Madrid</a> certainly seems to be the most likely destination for Mbappe. However, the forward has yet to rule out the possibility of leaving Europe altogether. “Many great players who have shaped the history of football have left Europe this summer and we are entering a new era,” continued Mbappe.



“It’s become part of the cycle of this sport, and at some point, it will be my turn to leave. I’m not worried about these changes. I’m simply thinking about continuing my career and following my own path.”



Lionel Messi became the most high-profile player to leave Europe last summer. The World Cup winner departed PSG for <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/mls-tv-schedule/">Major League Soccer</a> side <a href="https://worldsoccertalk.com/teams/inter-miami-tv-schedule/">Inter Miami</a> in a move that sent shockwaves through the soccer world.

PSG star Kylian Mbappe has claimed that soccer stars may turn to load management currently seen in the NBA to help ease rest concerns.

The UEFA Champions League exudes drama. It is unpredictable and exciting. Plus, it produces storylines that can be as short as a span of minutes or stretch across the entire season.
Clubs from across Europe could go on miracle runs. For example, Ajax in 2019 reached the semifinals, knocking off Real Madrid and Juventus in the process. The same exists for Monaco in 2016/17. Then, the ultimate underdog success story, Jose Mourinho’s Porto won the UEFA Champions League in the 2003/04 season.
Theoretically speaking, any team in the competition has a shot at winning. Even just this season, Sheriff Tiraspol, the first Moldovan side to even play in the UEFA Champions League, beat the 13-time champions Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.
No one would dispute the fact that Real Madrid is currently and always has been superior to Sheriff. However, for that one night, lowly Sheriff Tiraspol outlasted Los Blancos.
The thing about the Champions League and its underdog stories is that there are a number of similarities to American Sports.
I will cede that passion and drama are perhaps more prominent and consistent in the Champions League. However, at its core, the UEFA Champions League is nothing more than a playoff among the best teams from last season’s ‘regular season,’ or just domestic league play.
Too often do fans of soccer harangue American sports because of their association with money or the lack of importance of the regular season. However, there are certain similarities between things like the NFL, the NBA, the NHL, MLB or various college sports and European soccer.
Oftentimes, people do not enjoy the major sports in the United States. Yet, for people who turn their back on American sports for the following reasons, they do not differ much from Europe’s biggest competition.
<h5>Prejudices</h5>
I find that many soccer fans in the United States are not interested in American sports. That is not to say&nbsp;all&nbsp;American soccer fans. For example, I love soccer. Played it growing up and watch as much as I can now. That being said, I also have a passion for American sports teams. If you are curious, those are the Miami Dolphins, Tampa Bay Lightning, Tampa Bay Rays and my alma mater Florida Gators.
As a sport, soccer differs greatly from those. Soccer is fluid, does not have the seemingly incessant commercial breaks in the middle of games and caters to different people with different skills.
This piece is not to change people’s opinions on what sports they enjoy. Watch what you enjoy, simple as that.
Rather, below are similarities between two entities that some people often try to separate. For better or for worse, the UEFA Champions League is no more than the postseason for Europe’s elite.
<h5>Which shows more success, league play or the Champions League?</h5>

Also, I think it is important to make clear that I, personally, find league success more impressive than continental success. Additionally, I find league success more impressive because it is not wildly unpredictable or dramatic. And, yes, these are the same reasons I love the Champions League, it is beautiful because we struggle to predict what will happen.
Understandably, those who say the Champions League shows more success cite the fact that a club like PSG can beat up on minnows like Troyes or FC Lorient. PSG won seven of the last nine Ligue 1 titles, but they cannot thrive on the European stage. Then the same applies to all of Europe’s biggest leagues. Therefore, people who prioritize Champions League success likely would have found the European Super League to be more enjoyable, pitting major clubs against each other each week.
Thankfully, that did not come to fruition.
Instead, if we look at a club like Manchester City, which is on track to win its fourth EPL title in five seasons, there is true dominance. A Champions League celebration still eludes the Etihad Stadium, but the run of titles from the Citizens is impressive. This is especially true considering that two of the UEFA Champions League winning teams in those years finished behind City in the league. Liverpool finished second in the 2018/19 Premier League, despite winning the Champions League. Then, just two years later, Chelsea won the Champions League, despite struggling to a fourth-placed finish domestically.
There is merit to both arguments, it is what makes European soccer great. Yet, the <a href="https:\/\/www.cbssports.com/soccer/news/champions-league-final-full-list-of-all-ucl-and-european-cup-winners-as-chelsea-man-city-try-to-make-history/">tournament-style Champions League</a> allows for more parity, which is exciting. It resembles American sports, which is not a bad thing as many would like to claim.
<h3>Similarities between American sports and European soccer via playoffs</h3>
<h5>Qualification</h5>
The main difference between European soccer and American sports is what happens at the end of the ‘season’. In soccer, the team that finishes top of the league is the champion. Meanwhile, the team (or teams) that finish at the top get some kind of advantage for the playoffs.
Lower leagues often have a playoff system that determines promotion or relegation, rather than a true title of the country.
The best way to draw a comparison between European soccer and American sports is through using the Champions League as ‘playoffs’ for Europe. At that rate, the comparisons become apparent.
Each domestic league serves as a division. Let’s take something like the NFL for example. There are eight divisions in the NFL divided out of two conferences. The winners of each division get into the NFL playoffs, with the next three-best teams from each conference also qualifying.
In both competitions, the regular season’s sole purpose is to get to the next phase.
Due to the size of European soccer, there are more opportunities to qualify. Of course, that is not relatively speaking. Part of the thrill of the Champions League is the fact that only the best in each league have the opportunity to compete in the continental cup. Each team in one year’s Champions League can look back on the previous season’s domestic effort with pride.
In the NFL, almost half of the possible teams qualify. Of the 32 NFL teams, 14 reach the playoffs.
<h5>Parity in champions</h5>
There is a benefit to having this many teams in the event that most American fans look forward to. In MLB, NFL, NHL and NBA play, there are varieties of champions that emerge as ‘world champions.’
The tournament-style competitions allows for upsets, especially considering that the NFL is single-game knockout. The NBA, NHL and MLB have series ranging from three to seven games, eliminating some of that parity.
The two-legged nature of the Champions League knockout stage is something of a series itself. Even then, a three-goal comeback is not something that is impossible. For reference, just ask FC Barcelona how it went in consecutive seasons against Roma and Liverpool.
Say what you will about the Champions League not demonstrating which club is the best overall, the ability for a ‘small’ club to pull off results against the usual suspects is thrilling.
Is it truly the best way to say who is the ‘best team in Europe’? Probably not. Yet, frankly, there is not a better way to go about it that allows every European club to be in the conversation.

However, for something as pre-established and dominant as European soccer, the season-long competition makes more sense.

MLB scheduled its Interleague dates to start right after the finals of the NBA.&nbsp; It is a great move for baseball because it rejuvenates&nbsp;its fans and transitions sports fans by refocusing their attention from basketball to baseball.
MLB has begun to master its technique for giving Interleague baseball the spotlight in the crowded sports calendar and has accentuated the rarity of matchups among teams by having in-state, intra-city rivals playing&nbsp;one week and the next week having World Series rematches, as well as other oddly encounters.&nbsp;
Drama&nbsp;has followed baseball’s good moves.&nbsp; Anyone watching&nbsp;Interleague play in the&nbsp;last two weeks will have noticed that there has been an unbelievable amount of highlights, history and walk-off wins.&nbsp; The steroid controversies, ticket prices&nbsp;and other problems with ego-driven players that has plagued baseball does not seem to be effecting the public’s will.&nbsp; Baseball is coming through this Summer in better position than originally thought by many critics and it seems to be weathering the financial storm.&nbsp;
It is also no secret that MLB is working all the angles of college baseball.&nbsp; The college World Series played out tremendously this year, as its format has begun to take&nbsp;on more tradition and more recognition with each year that passes.&nbsp;
Make no mistake about it, Soccer is competing with baseball for the American sports fan’s dollar.&nbsp; More than any other sport, baseball is a thorn in the side of the growth and popularity of U.S. pro Soccer because it is a constant scene stealer.&nbsp; This is a reality mostly because of the timing of the seasons they play.&nbsp;
But, there is no doubt&nbsp;to the fact that the&nbsp;Confederation Cup has&nbsp;boosted Soccer in the consciousness of the U.S. sports fan.&nbsp; It proves the U.S. is nearing equal footing with the best in the world.&nbsp;
What effects will&nbsp;possibly winning Confed Cup and winning the Gold Cup&nbsp;have on recruiting new fans for the struggling professional leagues, MLS, USL and NPSL?&nbsp; Will the boost from the Confed Cup and upcoming coverage of the Gold Cup help the U.S. pro leagues with attendance in general?&nbsp;
Attendance should rally not only due to improved international play, but also because of hotter temperatures and better weather across the country.&nbsp;
Of course, if there is no improvement in attendance or television ratings, no worries.&nbsp; Soccer purists have it figured&nbsp;to be only that&nbsp;‘the public needs to have patience’ as these professional leagues develop.&nbsp; After all, they are such young leagues.&nbsp;
Sometimes though, it seems as if&nbsp; U.S. pro Soccer can’t catch any breaks.&nbsp;&nbsp;On the heels of the success of the USMNT in the Confed Cup comes the unfortunate link of AEG, a huge part of MLS and its future, to the&nbsp;July-planned Michael Jackson concert series in England.&nbsp; What&nbsp;impact will&nbsp;Michael Jackson’s death have on AEG’s financials and what transferrence will be felt in MLS ?&nbsp;It appears certain there will be some sort of significant fallout, as AEG was&nbsp;way deep into its commitment with the King of Pop.

In order for Soccer to find the success it seeks in the U.S., it must make changes to the traditional rules without changing the integrity of the sport.&nbsp; Soccer can be that viable alternative for sports fans in the U.S. if it plays with American rules and also&nbsp;promotes&nbsp;the game to fit U.S. sports fans expectations, not&nbsp;the expectations of soccer enthusiasts.
The game of Soccer, like all other American spectator sports, must be tinkered with from time to time in order to maintain its entertainment value for the newest generation.&nbsp; But, the sport must not be altered significantly to where it is not recognized as Soccer.&nbsp; The integity of the sport must be kept intact (10 on 10 where no one touches the ball with their hands and one Goalkeeper for each side).
In sport, it is common for rules to vary from country to country.&nbsp; FIBA, the International Federation of Basketball plays its games under its rules, including a trapezoid key (paint).&nbsp; The U.S. adheres to these rules during international play and reverts back to its own rules for play in the NBA.
All&nbsp;strategies&nbsp;for delivering the product must adjust&nbsp;to the spectatorship landscape of the U.S. sports fans.&nbsp; If done with an American flavor,&nbsp;soccer can be an enduring spectator sport in the&nbsp;U.S.&nbsp; It has the ability to provide unique drama, escape and entertainment.&nbsp; It is definitely possible to raise the American consciousness for the appreciation of Soccer and it can become the 4th most dominating spectator sport in America.&nbsp;
Soccer needs to be serious, competitive, fun, and&nbsp;unapologetically American.&nbsp; The rules changes and marketing schemes must take responsibility in perfecting the art in the sport.&nbsp; They must make sure that the skill involved in the sport is showcased and that every match is played with contemporary sports drama and theatre.&nbsp; Action, tension during the contests and common sense in the rules must take precedence so that every game has the potential to rise to the occasion and be an unforgettable sporting spectacle.
There is a lot that must be done for American soccer to succeed.&nbsp; Sports fans in the U.S. expect more from their spectator sports.&nbsp; They are different than sports fans from other parts of the world.&nbsp; They are more sophisticated and they have been spoiled.&nbsp; The greatest moments in the recent history of sports have occurred in American sports or with American athletes.
The&nbsp;sport has been built-up significantly over time at the youth level and upwards through high-school and college levels.&nbsp; But, in order for professional soccer in the U.S. to derive the most amount of fan support possible, the marketing must become event-driven and reach&nbsp;the diehard sports fans.
Soccer can become a fabric of the American sports fans environment just as football,&nbsp;basketball, and&nbsp;baseball have consistently achieved from year to year.&nbsp;&nbsp;Soccer must think&nbsp;progressive in their rules amendments and consider what makes 4th down, the 3 and 2 count and the last-second shot so appealing to sports fans.
