
<p><a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/category/wrexham/">Wrexham AFC</a> looks set to soon expand on its home stadium with new approval for expansion. The Welsh club had a new proposal approved during a meeting with the Wrexham County Borough Council’s on Monday. The plan is to add a 5,500-seat stand to the historic Racecourse Ground.</p>



<p>First, Wrexham must tear down the existing kop to <a href="https:\/\/www.wrexhamafc.co.uk/news/2022/november/kop-development--planning-committee-approval/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">make room the new stand</a>. The old stand has <a href="https:\/\/www.dailypost.co.uk/news/north-wales-news/new-kop-stand-wrexham-afcs-25459091" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reportedly</a> been in subpar condition for over a decade.</p>



<p>Owners and co-chairman Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney issued a <a href="https:\/\/www.wrexhamafc.co.uk/news/2022/november/kop-development--planning-committee-approval/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">statement</a> on the news. “With planning committee approval&nbsp;now secured, we can move forward with the Kop Development, starting with the demolition of the existing structure,” claimed the duo. </p>



<p>“The derelict state of the Kop, has long been an eyesore and we hope that by the start of the 2024/25 season, it will be brought back into use, with another 5,500 fans able to watch games live, as well as providing a superb backdrop for those watching on TV.”</p>

<h2>Wrexham historic stadium gets expansion, facelift</h2>



<p>Racecourse Ground is an historic stadium in the United Kingdom. Initially built in 1807, and opened for soccer games in 1864, the stadium has been Wrexham’s only permanent home. In fact, it is the oldest stadium that still currently hosts international soccer matches. </p>



<p>The Wales national soccer team began playing competitive matches at the ground in 1877. Nearly a 150 years later, the Dragons still occasionally play games at Racecourse Ground.</p>



<p>The club determines complete funding for the stadium expansion later this month. However, the club has announced that ownership is making a “significant financial contribution” towards the new stand.</p>



<p>Reynolds and McElhenney previously purchased the Welsh team in 2020. Nearly 99% of Wrexham Supporters Trust members approved of the decision.</p>

<p>An ESPN spokeswoman confirmed to World Soccer Talk that Wrexham’s next FA Cup game is going to be streamed on <a href="https:\/\/go.web.plus.espn.com/mWebq" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ESPN+</a>. Scheduled for Sunday, November 6 at 7:30AM ET, Wrexham’s <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/fa-cup-tv-schedule/">FA Cup</a> First Round game is against Oldham Athletic.</p>



<h2>Wrexham’s next FA Cup game a big one for Hollywood stars</h2>



<p>With Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney as the owners of Wrexham AFC, interest in the Welsh club continues to grow at a rapid pace. Helped by the very successful <em>Welcome to Wrexham</em> series that’s available to <a href="https:\/\/go.web.plus.espn.com/c/330866/715435/9070" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">binge on Hulu</a>, more Americans are becoming fans of Wrexham AFC.</p>

<h2>Wrexham’s familiar opposition</h2>



<p>After Wrexham knocked Blyth Spartans out of the FA Cup Qualifying Round, the fifth-tier club are very familiar with Oldham, who are in the same division as Wrexham.</p>

<p>If the Dragons defeat Oldham on November 6, Wrexham’s present will be a FA Cup Second Round on Thanksgiving Day weekend.</p>



<p>It’s not until the FA Cup Third Round where non-league clubs have a chance to play teams in the Premier League and English Championship. But the Dragons still have a long way to go before they even get a chance to start dreaming about FA Cup giant killing.</p>

<p>This game actually changed time slots just to accommodate the American audience. Previously, the Blyth vs Wrexham game had minimal coverage plans. After all, these are two non-league teams just trying to get to the first round proper of this season’s FA Cup. However, with the rise in popularity of Wrexham AFC, the FA bumped the game up by two hours for the American audience.</p>



<p>This game is actually at Blyth, meaning that many Americans are seeing the side for the first time. In terms of Wrexham, many fans may be used to the Racecourse Ground and the players. This is something entirely new for them.</p>

The <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/podcasts/humphrey-ker-interview-executive-director-at-wrexham-afc/">documentary series</a> that follows events surrounding Wrexham A.F.C., as well as their owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, has been a resounding hit.</p>



<p>McElhenney himself confirmed that the show will come back for an additional season. “Oops. Sorry. Tonight is the last episode of Season 1 of @Wrexhamfx,” McElhenney tweeted on Wednesday. “Season 2 will return next year. I have a clause in my contract that stipulates I will not do anything less than 16 seasons of a TV show.”</p>



<p>The actor’s joke is a reference to another show <em>It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia</em>. It has also been confirmed that season 16 of this show will be released sometime in the Fall of 2023.</p>



<p>Fans of season 1 of <em><a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/podcasts/welcome-to-wrexham-and-why-pro-rel-is-or-isnt-a-non-starter-in-the-us/">Welcome to Wrexham</a></em> met the program with overwhelming praise since its release in August. Reelgood is an aggregator that compiles statistics on television streaming. The website claims the show, starring McElhenney and Reynolds, finished as the <a href="https:\/\/www.mediaplaynews.com/reelgood-hbo-maxs-house-of-the-dragon-tops-weekly-streaming-sylvester-stallones-samaritan-has-strong-debut/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">seventh-most watched show</a> in the United States for the week of September 2nd.</p>

<h2><em>Welcome to Wrexham </em>season two</h2>



<p>Rotten Tomatoes has also reported an average <a href="https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/welcome_to_wrexham" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">approval rating of 90%</a> from critics for <em>Welcome to Wrexham</em>. Along with high praise from the critics, the show currently has a 97% average audience score by the film and television review-aggregation website as well.</p>



<p>McElhenney and Reynolds previously bought Wrexham A.F.C in a deal completed in February of 2021. Fans of the team overwhelmingly backed the purchase by the duo with nearly 99% of voters happy with the agreement.</p>



<p>Founded in 1864, Wrexham is the oldest team in Wales. The Red Dragons currently compete in the fifth tier of the English Football League’s system.</p>



<p>Due to the public attraction of the new owners, the club was included in FIFA 22 as a “Rest of the World” team. It was the first non-league club to be included in the video game.</p>

<p>The winner of the Fourth Qualifying Round game moves on to the First Round of the oldest national football competition in the world. During the First Round, teams from League One and League Two enter the competition. Therefore, the prospect of a non-league team facing a much bigger club creates an enticing David versus Goliath opportunity.</p>



<p>Wrexham, currently in the National League, are hoping to get promoted from the fifth tier of English football. </p>

<p>This season, Ryan Reynolds took to Twitter to express his frustration that the <a href="https:\/\/twitter.com/vancityreynolds/status/1564327631750832130" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National League and BT Sport wouldn’t allow games to be televised</a> live to fans both domestically and internationally. With the FA Cup, the competition gives Wrexham an ideal opportunity to advance through the tournament in order to reach a worldwide television audience.</p>



<p>In the United States, many of the FA Cup games are <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/where-to-watch-the-fa-cup-on-us-tv/">shown exclusively via ESPN+</a>. For ESPN to decide to broadcast a Fourth Round Qualifying game on US television is remarkable.</p>



<p>Coincidentally, both Reynolds and McElhenney appeared on the studio set of SportsCenter in a skit that aired on <em>Welcome to Wrexham</em>.</p>



<p><em>Welcome to Wrexham</em> airs on Wednesday nights on FX, and is shown on demand via Hulu. FX also announced that the documentary series is <a href="https:\/\/worldsoccertalk.com/tv/mcelhenney-confirms-welcome-to-wrexham-season-two-20221013-WST-404291.html">returning for a second season</a>. That new season comes out sometime in the Fall of 2023.</p>

<p>This documentary highlights <a href="https:\/\/www.wrexhamafc.co.uk/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Wrexham AFC</a>, a club in the fifth tier of the English soccer pyramid. In late 2020, actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took over ownership of the club, despite having no prior knowledge of soccer ownership. Eventually, they find out that the club is a symbol of the city. The soccer club provides hope for a community that desperately needs it. However, Reynolds and McElhenney do not exactly carry an air of expertise in sports ownership.</p>
<p>Therein lies the premise of the show. A pair of famous actors take over the third oldest professional club in the world and try to lead it back to glory. Boardwalk Pictures, the same production company responsible for Netflix’s <em>Last Chance U</em>, produced <em>Welcome to Wrexham</em>.</p>

After this Wednesday’s showing, the remaining episodes for the docuseries air each Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET to match. In total, there are a total of 10 episodes, with two episodes airing each of those Wednesdays. Therefore, the last episodes air on September 21.</p>
